About Mary Ellen
I have been teaching freelance for many years, mostly guiding students of all levels through the graded examinations, RIAM, ABRSM, or LCM. I am equally comfortable teaching jazz piano, helping students to navigate jazz harmony and improvisation. I have also worked as a school-based piano teacher, coordinating group after-school club lessons. My own work combines influences from jazz and contemporary classical music. As part of my Master's, I studied with numerous prominent composers including Richard Iles and Gwilym Simcock. I have written for jazz ensembles, classical ensembles, and solo piano. I am particularly interested in encouraging the representation of women in the musical sphere and was the co-founder and artistic director of Centre Stage, a concert showcasing the work of emerging composers. Education Bachelors of Music (Bmus), University College Cork 2006 Bachelors of Arts in Jazz Performance (BAJP), Newpark Dublin 2010 MA in Composition (MAComp), Leeds College of Music 2014 Diploma in Piano Teaching (ALCM), University of West London 2021
