About Leonor
I'm a violinist and violist with two master's degrees, one in (classical) performance from the Conservatory of Geneva, Switzerland, and one in Jazz Performance from Queens College in NYC. I grew up in Venezuela, come from a musical family, then spent 3 years in Geneva and so far 12 in NYC performing, teaching, recording, and composing. New York City has shaped my musicianship and I couldn't be happier with this path I've taken. I have the opportunity to play different kinds of music often, I've been able to record two albums of my own music and many other of collaborative works and I've taught in different parts of the city as well as summer camps throughout the years. My favorite thing about teaching is how much I learn while at it!

If you're a beginner and have never played an instrument before, I'll start by teaching you about the instrument, and how it works, and then start working on posture which is very important to get good sound production. Once my students demonstrate a basic understanding of this I usually start with a very basic song that can be played in only one string.
I have an O'Connor method teaching certificate. I love this method because it connects the technical part of the learning process with music, improvisation, creativity, and harmony. I believe those are aspects that are neglected in the traditional conservatory/academic settings for all string players in general so I like to teach these hand in hand with technique.
If you're an intermediate or advanced student, I will use some time from the lesson to ask you what would you want to take out from my lessons, what you'd like to improve on, what are your goals, and based on that I'd tailor a lesson plan that goes with your needs.

Deadly! I had my first lesson with Leonor and it was a good experience. She is very nice and encouraging, and gives positive feedback that makes you feel comfortable.
Deadly! Leonor is very knowledgeable and is able to provide a lot of feedback on troubleshooting sound and I feel like I have a lot to work on (in a good way) between sessions and feel confident in the process and direction to go with practicing. She is very flexible and understanding with computer issues or children popping briefly on camera during practice. She brings a calming presence and I do not feel self conscious missing strings or having terrible sound around her and i am excited to work with her again in two weeks.
Deadly! Very patient amd encouraging.
Deadly! Leonor is a very thoughtful and understanding instructor! I enjoyed my lesson and am looking forward to learning more about the violin!
Deadly! Learning with Leonor has been a great experience. Everywhere I look, most teachers are classically-focused and I was looking for more jazz viola/violin instruction. She has a wealth of experience, being a jazz violinist herself, and has helped me tackle jazz as a whole. Tips on how to improvise were useful and I was able to implement them into my jazz workshop classes right away. Many pieces I play are for more traditional jazz instruments so she helps me approach how a viola would play the tune and changes to bowings and it's helped me keep up. I can come up to her with any confusions I have and she can help me.
- Michal is a very dedicated and curious student, always on time, and always prepared. I enjoy teaching him very much!Leonor's response :
Deadly! Leonor is happy and personable! My 11 year old daughter is actually looking forward to weekly lessons! We'll done Leonnor! Thank you!
Deadly! Despite lessons being solely on Zoom, Leonor is able to connect with the student. My grandson loves studying with her. She is very patient and focused. Her instructions are clear and she is very adept with the technology and knowledgeable about online resources. My grandson has just started studying the violin so he is doing very basic stuff but Leonor has made it interesting and fun.
- Thank you so much for your kind review Naomi! It is a pleasure to work with Sebastian, he seems eager to learn and very motivated and that makes the lesson way easier for me.Leonor's response :

I met Leonor at the Mark O'Connor fiddle camp, where she was a classroom teacher of beginner fiddle players (like me!). I began to study with her privately in person shortly after that, and continued with online lessons during the pandemic. An exceptionally accomplished violinist, Leonor is a knowledgeable and patient teacher, with a well thought-out method. She was open to my particular musical interests, and was always cheerful and encouraging, even when I was not! I highly recommend her.
Leonor is an impecable teacher, caring about technique, theory, practice but especially the student. She cares about the child’s spirit, personally and skill level to strength their character and instill confidence. We couldn’t recommend her more, Leonor is well organized, super patient and awesome!
