About Theo
I am a self-taught artist using oil paints as my preferred medium. During many years of experimenting with oils, I can now teach what I have learned. In my early 20s, I spent many hours in the University of Auckland library, where I discovered translated copies of old books on the techniques of the early painters. Although I was not a student, I had access to the art library. The artists who inspired me the most were Vermeer, Caravaggio, Ingres, Jacques-Louis David, Bouguereau, Leighton, Draper, Poynter, Dali, and Annigoni, to name a few. Art books that have significantly impacted me include Artist's Techniques in Golden Age Spain: Six Treatises in Translation, 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship by Dali. Stylistically, my most significant influence is Salvador Dali - not because of his surrealism but because of, within his best paintings, the radiant clarity his style projects. My oil paintings and giclée prints are now owned and enjoyed by private art collectors internationally.

This course suits students of any age who would like to know how to paint like the old Masters such as Vermeer, Bouguereau plus the better works of Dali. I will take the frustration out of painting well. Free half-hour consult to establish student requirements and goals. Flexible hours to suit the student Learn how to create: The imprimatura (initial sketch in oils) The grisaille (black & white underpainting) Color glazing - multiple layers of thin color Best advice for surfaces, easels, brushes, oil paints & mediums Differences in approaches to painting by various artists. The above course focuses on technique, however, further options to learn are; style, subject matter and developing themes. All courses include written notes.
