About Derrick
Hi! I am ShaoYang "Derrick" Gu. I am a second-year Chinese student studying Economics and Communications at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I spent two years of high school in Toronto, Canada, and live in the United States. I am passionate about sharing my native language and culture with others by tutoring Mandarin. My favorite part of tutoring is helping students practice their speaking skills and learn about China. I like tutoring not only because I can help students achieve their academic goals but also because we can both learn from each other. Since I grew up in China and later lived in North America, I have experienced many cultural differences, primarily in how different people interact with each other. In my opinion, learning a language also entails learning its culture. So, I help students learn about Chinese culture to speak more authentic Mandarin. Outside of tutoring, I am a member of Delta Sigma Phi, a social fraternity, and SEP, a professional business fraternity. I am also a student body senator and vice president of the Carolina Car Club. I am interested in business and am now running a start-up specializing in selling phone and AirPod cases.

Learning a language also entails learning its culture. So, I help students learn about Chinese culture to speak more authentic Mandarin.
I was born and grew up in China; thus, Mandarin is my mother tongue. I spent two years of high school in Toronto and then moved to the US after graduation. I am currently studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am double majoring in Economics and Communications. Back in high school, I had a full year of voluntary experience in one of the Mandarin Learning programs in Canada.
The lessons are for Mandarin learners at any level.

Deadly! Derrick was friendly and engaging for our first meeting. He asked good questions to figure out how he could be helpful. He taught me some new vocabulary. We practiced speaking Chinese and he helped me with my homework. I look forward to scheduling future sessions with him.
