About Lauren
My name is Lauren and I am so happy you clicked on my profile! If you choose to study English with me, I'd like you to know that I am also a student so I understand how daunting (but also exciting) learning can be. I am a Creative Writing student at BA level and my work is mainly based in prose, poetry and performance poetry. I also got 8s (A*s), in English Literature and Language at GCSE and have a City and Guild Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management (if horses interest you at all). My teaching career (a combined seven years of informal and formal tutoring) is incredibly varied and spans from working with Girlguides, giving lessons in horseriding with the RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) and working as a camp counsellor in the mountains of North Carolina! During my A-levels, I independently ran a creative writing club for younger students. Now, I am a student ambassador with my university, which allows me to work within schools across Dorset and inspire the next generation to love reading, writing and literature just as much as I do. Whilst my experience is not the most linear, its broadness lends me a fresh and varied perspective on creative writing which I find to be essential for crafting well-rounded and independent bodies of work, as well as bringing energy and enthusiasm to academic learning that helps inspire a passion for learning.

*Note: lessons can run from half an hour to an hour - Reading: my main goal with reading lessons is to build your confidence. Things may get a little silly! We will do various exercises to warm you up if reading aloud is something that makes you nervous and explore texts that interest you to garner a positive association with it. If what you need most is practice and to explore more challenging literature, I will push you with the texts I ask you to read and introduce words you may find difficult or have not seen before in a fun and interesting context. Whatever we do, my aim will be for you to learn to love reading! - English essay help: we will use the PEA (Point Evidence Analysis) structure as a guideline (if this works for you) and, together, delve into your exam board marking specification to ensure you understand what is being asked of you and how to let your ability shine through in a way that will help you achieve your academic goals. I will teach you how to think like the person who will be marking your work and, if desired, will set essay-based homework in line with your current studies that we can go through together in later lessons. My main aim will be to help you build a framework of understanding that you can apply to any English essay you write, allowing you to excel. - Poetry: these lessons will be led by you and your goals. I can be a proofreader, and/or give you writing prompts to help you build a regular poetry writing practice. Whatever you need to help you build confidence or simply get something on the page, we will get to the roots of what you're trying to say and work outwards from there to craft something you love. We may explore timed writing activities, picture prompts or taking up new narrative voices. Whatever we do, however, my main goal will be to build your confidence in your creative ability. - Creative writing: these lessons will be led by you and your goals. I can help you learn how to proofread your own writing or act as a fresh pair of eyes when it comes to the editing process. We can also work together to build a regular writing practice if that is something you would like to integrate into your life, and in this case, I can take you through writing prompts and activities to help you develop your skillset and challenge you as a writer. If fun writing homework is something you'd be interested in, I can also integrate that into your learning.
