About Pavel

I'm a game designer and programmer with over a decade's experience working in the game industry. It wasn't until I found game development that I truly felt I could combine my love of the arts with the pleasure and satisfaction of maths and logic.

Years of studying logic and abstract thought in a philosophy degree became integral to building complex systems for gameplay. Maths that had seemed utterly pointless suddenly integral to character movement or procedural generation. And suddenly all of it became easier because it was all driving to a creative end that I could be played and enjoyed.

This is something I want to share with my students. The possibility that code, logic and maths can give you. These are not just dry, abstract things needed for passing exams. They can be vehicles to delightful, fun and incredible creations. What better way to learn than by creating something fun?

While I'm excited to share my knowledge with students, I also continue to work in industry. My passion is in emergent gameplay systems, and procedural storytelling. But, truth be told, any game idea can be exciting and fun to bring to life.

About the lesson

What if you could learn maths, logic and programming all while nurturing your imagination?

So often skills like programming, maths and logic, are taught as dry intellectual exercises, divorced from anything fun or creative.

It doesn't have to be this way!

Together we'll learn how to code, and use mathematics and logic, to create something fun and playful, regardless of age or experience.

How will it work?

It's important that you are excited about learning, so we'll start by discussing what you want to create and what you're interested in learning. And if you're not totally sure, that's completely fine. We'll find something together that meets your learning goals while sparking your imagination. We'll also get you set up: we'll work in C# and Unity game engine - it provides a nice balance of difficulty and accessibility, and is a great starting language.

How will lessons work?

Once we've established what we want to make and your current level, lessons will be structured around meeting your learning goals and progressing your project. Lessons will typically be an hour long. We'll start with a check-in, catching up with what progress you've made and any difficulties you've encountered.

Depending on this chat, we may then dive into a particular topic of interest or difficulty, or we may move on to the next planned lesson. Lessons will be a combination of explanation, exercises and discussion.

Finally, we'll review and go through what work you plan to do on your project for our next class. This may be working directly on your project or a series of exercises that embed the lessons of the class.
