About Jamie

I am in the second year of my degree in Philosophy, and am a curious and passionate member of the faculty at the University of York, often engaging in outside-of-class conversation with my professors, and I have also been awarded the social secretary position for the Philosophy Society (organising socials and discussions). My passion to tutor A level philosophy comes not just from my passion for the subject itself, but also from my experience of seeing how much difference a good teacher can make. I, personally, was helped by two very good teachers at my school to go from a B/C to an A (a few marks off from an A*). These teachers made such a difference that I am now confidently studying their subject at university! This not only means that I see the potential in all students studying this course, but that I also have first-hand experience of what works best.

About the lesson

From my experience in the A level, the methods that lead to the most success are those that involve actually practising answers and explaining concepts in your own words, rather than spending too much time on trying to learn large chunks of content (as there is famously a lot of waffle in philosophy). As a result, a large part of my lessons are designed around exam questions, and the key information that will be required when answering a paper. But fear not! This won't be anywhere near as mind-numbing as it sounds! The lessons themselves will be completely conversational to maximise engagement and efficiency, as well as to make sure the concepts involved are fully understood (though I will ask to see some written answers for the longer questions to assess exam technique and written fluency). This helps both me and the student understand where improvement is needed so they can ace their exams!
