A few strategies that I have learned while teaching in the classroom for reading is to read aloud to the students, ask questions to assess comprehension throughout the story, provide time for students to write, or draw what they learned from the story, and word decoding techniques to help students read/learn words that they don't know yet.
Typical lesson plan: read a story and make a "retelling rope" with the setting, characters, problem, what happened in the beginning, middle, and end, and the solution. This allows for students to organize their thoughts and learn the elements of a story.
This lesson plan would be for first-graders, specifically for reading.
