About Ryan

I’m Dr Ryan Shah, a cybersecurity professional and researcher with a PhD in Cyber Security and a background spanning academia, research and industry. I have experience working across cybersecurity, information security, security assurance, governance, risk and compliance, and have worked with organisations across a range of sectors.

My academic background includes peer-reviewed cybersecurity research and experience in higher education, while my professional work has involved applying security frameworks, conducting assurance and risk activities, and helping organisations turn complex requirements into practical outcomes.

I enjoy helping people understand cybersecurity rather than simply memorising concepts. Whether you are a university student, starting a career in cybersecurity, or an experienced professional looking to strengthen your knowledge, I bring both academic depth and real-world experience to each lesson.

About the lesson

My approach is practical, personalised and focused on genuine understanding. I break complex cybersecurity concepts into clear, manageable ideas and use real-world examples, scenarios and guided exercises to connect theory with how security works in practice.

A typical 60-minute lesson follows a simple structure:

• 5–10 minutes: Review previous topics, answer questions and identify areas to focus on.
• 15–20 minutes: Introduce and explain the main concept for the session.
• 20–25 minutes: Apply the concept through practical examples, scenarios, questions or guided exercises.
• 5–10 minutes: Recap the key points, address remaining questions and agree on what to work on next.

The goal is that you finish every lesson with a clear understanding of what you have learnt, confidence in explaining it yourself, and practical knowledge of how it applies to real-world cybersecurity. Where appropriate, I will also provide suggestions for further study or areas to practise before the next session.

I tailor the pace and difficulty to each student. Whether you are completely new to cybersecurity, studying at university, preparing for a certification, or already working in the industry, lessons are adapted to your goals and existing knowledge.

With a PhD in Cybersecurity and professional industry experience in information security, security assurance and GRC, I bring both academic knowledge and practical experience to every lesson.
