About Tessa
Across fourteen years of tutoring I have taught French to 690 students, ranging from beginners to advanced learners preparing for demanding language examinations. My own fluency developed through years of professional work involving frequent travel to French speaking countries, which gave me a strong practical understanding of how the language is actually used outside formal study. I am a structured and thorough tutor, and I believe steady, well organized progress produces far more reliable results than sporadic intense study. Many students come to me after feeling frustrated by slow progress elsewhere, and rebuilding a clear sense of direction is often the first thing I focus on. Former students frequently update me on their travels or careers years later, which remains one of the most satisfying parts of long term teaching.

After fourteen years teaching French I rely on a structured, layered approach, introducing grammar systematically while ensuring every rule is immediately practised through natural conversation rather than isolated exercises. I diagnose each student's specific weaknesses early through a short spoken and written assessment, allowing me to target lessons precisely rather than following a generic syllabus. Vocabulary is taught in thematic clusters connected to real situations, such as travel, work, or daily routines, which helps retention far more than random word lists. For exam candidates I use extensive timed past paper practice combined with detailed error review, distinguishing genuine misunderstanding from simple carelessness. I track every student's progress across months in detailed notes, allowing me to catch slow developing weaknesses before they affect exam performance.
