About Michael

My historical studies and interests have always been rooted in a personal fascination for the past and certain facets of history like war, foreign policy, and society. I believe understanding the causation, consequences and context behind the geopolitics and culture of the past can better inform us about contemporary society and the world we live in today. My interest in history became more profound when I began studying the subject in greater depth at A-level which focused on the Tudors and Soviet Russia.

This was furthered at University where I chose to take modules on early modern and early twentieth century history. This would eventually culminate in my dissertation: "FDR, Ambassadors, and Soviet Specialists: U.S. Foreign Policy towards the Soviet Union from Recognition to Lend-Lease." Although modern history was the focus of my dissertation, all eras of history have piqued my interest. This even led me to study non-history modules at University on classics and Egyptology. University gave me a lease of choice that allowed me to study modules on such a vast range of topics from Antiquity to medieval times, to World War II.

I'm grateful for my time at University as it has greatly improved my confidence and belief in my ability to deliver high-quality work within the confines of strict deadlines, whether that be an essay, dissertation or presentation. Exploring many geopolitical, economic and social developments over time has greatly helped to develop skills in research, critical thinking and written communication through in-depth scrutiny and reading of historical sources and data.

Having recently graduated with a first, I now hope to help others, passing on the same skills I have developed studying history over the years.

I would not say there is a specific approach for teaching as it is dependent on the student with regards to preferences, areas of improvement, or the topic and level of education. However, for me it is key to focus on exam questions and mark schemes as early as possible. Familiarising oneself with the criteria that markers are looking for enables students to get into a habit of producing strong, well-rounded answers that consistently meet the higher bands of marks.

Past papers, looking at and providing feedback on work, and model answers are also really effective ways to improve grades that I would also focus on during lessons. Besides focusing on questions and answers, knowledge and context is a salient aspect of history too.

A wider breadth of knowledge and contextual comprehension bolsters answers through a use of evidence to make stronger arguments whilst also affording students an ability to recognise certain patterns or understanding historical figures. To target these areas would include quizzes and recall exercises to refresh memory and reinforce knowledge.
