About Shaun
Hello, I'm Dr Shaun Phillips, a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at the University of Edinburgh.
I have dedicated my career to helping students understand sport and exercise science and achieve their academic goals. Over the past 17 years, I have taught and supported students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across a wide range of subjects, including exercise physiology, sport science, research methods, and statistics.
My academic qualifications include a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Edinburgh, an MSc (Distinction) in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University, and a Postgraduate Certificate (Distinction) in Higher Education Teaching. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), a CASES Accredited Physiologist (Pedagogy), and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
Throughout my career I have supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, taught thousands of students, authored a university-level textbook, and published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals. My teaching has been recognised through multiple university teaching award nominations, including nominations for Teacher of the Year and Supervisor of the Year.
Students often tell me that they appreciate my ability to explain difficult concepts clearly and patiently, particularly in areas such as physiology, research methods, and statistics. I believe that learning should be challenging but never intimidating, and I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing confidence in their abilities.
Whether you are preparing for examinations, working on coursework, tackling a dissertation, or simply looking to strengthen your understanding of a subject, I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

My teaching approach is centred on making complex topics clear, understandable, and relevant. Many students come to me feeling overwhelmed by subjects such as exercise physiology, research methods, statistics, or dissertation work. My aim is to break concepts down into manageable steps, build confidence, and develop genuine understanding rather than simply memorising information.
I tailor every lesson to the individual student's needs, goals, and current level of understanding. Lessons may focus on explaining key concepts, preparing for assessments and examinations, improving academic writing, developing research projects, interpreting scientific literature, or working through statistical analyses and data interpretation. I encourage students to ask questions and actively engage with the material, creating a supportive environment where learning becomes more enjoyable and effective.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate, particularly for dissertation support, research projects, or statistical analysis.
I am a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at the University of Edinburgh with over 17 years of higher education teaching experience. I hold a PhD in Exercise Physiology, an MSc (Distinction) in Exercise Physiology, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching, Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and CASES Accreditation in Physiology Pedagogy. I have extensive experience supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students, including dissertation supervision, research methods teaching, and statistics education.
My lessons are suitable for A-Level, undergraduate, and postgraduate students, as well as professionals seeking to develop their understanding of sport and exercise science. I particularly specialise in exercise physiology, environmental physiology, research methods, statistics, dissertation support, and scientific writing.
