About Richard
Dr Richard Pendry coaches MA and PhD students across the humanities and social sciences. An ethnographer by training, he is a thesis examiner and supervisory chair for PhD candidates at UK universities, and publishes in peer-reviewed academic journals. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent and brings an unusual combination of deep academic rigour and professional storytelling — as a BAFTA-winning documentary maker and filmmaker currently reporting from Ukraine. His journalism background gives him a rare ability to help students write with clarity and precision about complex ideas.
My background is unusual: BAFTA-winning documentary maker, active BBC journalist, published academic, PhD lead supervisor and examiner. I make complex ideas simple to academic writing — because if you can explain it clearly, you've understood it. Premium one-to-one sessions online.
Richard believes most postgraduate students are never properly taught what a thesis is supposed to do — how to structure an argument, why chapters are ordered as they are, what examiners are actually looking for. He offers ethical, personalised coaching to fill that gap: working alongside university supervisors, never replacing them, helping students understand and own their thesis from the inside out.

I coach MA and PhD students across humanities and social sciences to think, structure and write like researchers. Most postgraduate students are never explicitly taught what a thesis actually does — how it argues, how it moves, what examiners look for. That gap is what I fill, working alongside your university supervisor, not instead of them.
