About Calla

Hi, potential future student! I am Calla, an undergraduate student at Saint Louis University in the Honors program. I am Pre-Law, majoring in History and Philosophy with a minor in English. I am in a sorority (Delta Gamma) and was awarded a scholarship for my 4.0. I am currently the Director of Interfraternal Activities, a Committeewoman in SGA, a fierce competitor in Model United Nations and Mock Trial, the outreach coordinator for the Philosophy Club, an author for the University News, and more! I have had various jobs since middle school, including dog walking, babysitting, coffee making, and hostessing. In essence, I am no stranger to professionalism. I want potential students to know how proud they should feel for actively improving themselves by looking for a tutor. Very few people have the drive to invest in their academics and futures the way you do, which puts you one step ahead of the crowd. I hope I get to know you in the future, and I have no doubt we will have so much fun together!

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor varies based on what the child or teenager is trying to learn. For example, I wouldn't approach teaching rhetoric in the same way I would approach teaching reading. However, as a baseline, I would take the first few lessons to learn each child's strengths and weaknesses, interests and dislikes, then go from there. For example, if a middle schooler needs to learn about classic literature but hates it, I would apply the literature to their life in an entertaining way. I would make the literature more personal so they feel connected with what they read. What sets me apart as a tutor is my deep understanding of kids receive tutoring. My little brother needed a tutor for English, and it was something that he dreaded. Since I have such a personal connection with tutoring, I want to ensure that no one dreads tutoring like my brother did. My lessons are for anyone in elementary school up until their sophomore year of High School. I could help students in any English, Reading or Literacy class, from regular to accelerated. I can also help them with extracurricular work that requires writing, such as creative story competitions, Model United Nations position paper drafting, etc. My goal is to help the child or teenager understand, and enjoy, what they are learning as much as I will enjoy helping them!
