About Elizabeth

Literature and creative writing are my passions. As a Secondary Education Major, my goal is to become an English teacher. So far, I've taken a wide range of classes and conducted an honors thesis research project at my university. My goal is to expand my knowledge of literature. I have experience in tutoring students in many subjects but my main focus in in English. I exhibit extreme patience and understanding when working with students.

About the lesson

I'm a very patient and understanding tutor. I like to challenge my students to think deeply about literature by discussing books, themes and literary elements, and events of the time that help them gain a more comprehensive understanding of the book. I also have experience with teaching Spanish-speaking English Language Learners.

For high school students, I like to discuss their reading by running book-club style sessions so that they become comfortable speaking and actively thinking about the book and its ideas. I also like to teach literary analysis and research skills that will help them uncover any text. Additionally, I can also assign practice essays or work on helping students outline, plan, write, and edit school-assigned essays.

For creative writing students, I deliver lessons on characterization, plot structures, genre, theme development, and world-building. I am also able to review their own writing or assign creative writing prompts focused on developing their writing abilities.

For essay-writing students, I teach them basic research, rhetoric, writing, and editing skills that are necessary to construct a well-written argument.

For ELLs, I make sure to provide further differentiate and scaffolded instruction that works to build not only their English language skills, but also their confidence in those skills. If necessary, I can tutor in Spanish completely and work into a transition to Spanglish, then to English over the course of multiple sessions.

Upon request, I am able to provide example lesson plans which have been refined according to my supervisors' feedback and that I have previously used during my student teaching experience. I also don't mind parents or guardians sitting in for my sessions so that family members can get a sense of my teaching style and decided if we are a good fit for further tutoring.
