About Dylan
Dylan is a researcher with eight years of experience in the realm of African nationalist politics with a specific focus on elections, electoral reform, prefigurative social movements and social justice. Dylan is a member of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS). Dylan has published several articles in accredited academic journals. He has also presented papers in conferences at local and international levels. As part of his broader research interests, he has also participated in a project entitled Conceptualizing Migration, Identity and Citizenship Contestations as Global Phenomenon: An Interdisciplinary Perspective funded by the Directorate of Innovation and Research of the University of Venda. In addition, Dylan has extensive experience in Project Management. He was part of an organisation called Brain Waves Development that strives to attain the adoption of STEMI in the schools ’curriculum in the Gauteng Province by 2025. Currently, Dylan is a researcher at the Electoral Management Consulting Agency of Africa and an administrator for the New Nation Movement, an organisation focused on elections and electoral reforms in Southern Africa

My aim in teaching is to nurture the attainment of learning skills that would enable argument development, critical thinking and ensure students are competent agents of change in their societies and future working environments.
1. Teaching and Learning experience
I was attached to the Department of Development Studies in the School of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Venda for my postgraduate studies between 2013 and 2019. I implemented the concept of participatory learning which included debates, role-playing and thought experiments. For example in Conflict and Cooperation and Strategic Studies courses, I encouraged students to learn from multiple perspectives which included presentations on contemporary political, socio-economic, historical and developmental topics. They did so by representing countries, political parties, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations. This mode of learning was designed to connect students and rather than build walls with the concepts and themes of these courses. For example, students would be asked to form a group representing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)'s position on the expropriation of land without compensation in South Africa. Another example would ask students to form a group and represent China's position at the United Nations Security Council, on Israel's continued expansion in Palestinian lands. Such debates, in simple terms, allow the growth of a relationship between a student and the material being studied because of their involvement.
Second, as a tutor and teaching assistant, I formed a partnership with students that extended beyond the classroom. The accessible partnership meant I established student support initiatives, outside the lecture halls, through the classroom representatives such as bereavement funds for students who encountered death in the family. This had the potential to draw the students into a community of family-hood. Also, I adopted various ways through which I availed myself for every course. This took in the form of email, telephone and What’s App groups’ communications. I also made provisions for the end of the week and mid-semester assessments. In the former, Friday was reserved for providing a summative assessment of what was taught during the week and what to look forward to in the next week. In the latter, this provided an opportunity to identify gaps between the methods of teaching, material and the expectations from both the students and I and would subsequently use the students’ feedback to improve on my teaching methodology. This was key in keeping clarifying expectations between the students and me. Another effective approach I adopted was to create a sense of ownership by fostering debates during lecturers and also allowing other students to lead lectures through individual presentations
