About Matheus

My name is Matheus, and I hold a double degree in Computer Science and Economics from Boston University. I am deeply passionate about technology and committed to sharing the countless possibilities it offers, whether for building projects, solving problems, or simply exploring your creativity. I believe that programming is for everyone. Much like learning a new spoken language, understanding the language of computers is about learning how to express your ideas clearly and logically so that they can be executed by a machine. When I first started university, I had no prior experience in computer science or programming. Yet, I quickly discovered not only how accessible it could be, but also how much I enjoyed it. That experience fuels my teaching philosophy: if I could go from complete beginner to graduate, so can you. In my lessons, I bring a structured, clear, and patient approach, ensuring that each concept is both understood and applied. Whether you’re aiming for a career in tech, enhancing your problem-solving skills, or simply curious about coding, I am here to guide you every step of the way with professionalism, encouragement, and a genuine enthusiasm for helping you succeed.

About the lesson

I base my tutoring approach on the structure of the Introduction to Computer Science course at Boston University, but adapt it for an online, interactive environment. My goal is to make the fundamentals of computer programming and computer science approachable for absolute beginners while still challenging students to think critically and problem-solve. Each lesson blends theory, real-world examples, and hands-on coding exercises so students not only understand the concepts but can also apply them in practical contexts.

A typical lesson begins with a short review of the previous session to reinforce learning and address any lingering questions. I then introduce a new concept, breaking it down into clear, digestible explanations and illustrating it with examples. We follow this with guided practice, where I work through problems alongside the student, and independent practice, where the student applies what they’ve learned with my support as needed. Each session ends with a brief recap and a small assignment or project to encourage retention and skill development between lessons.

What sets me apart as a tutor is the balance I strike between a university-level structure and a beginner-friendly pace. I contextualize abstract ideas with real-world applications so students can see why the material matters. I am patient and adaptable, tailoring my teaching style to match each student’s background, learning style, and goals.

My lessons are designed for high school students exploring computer science for the first time, undergraduates taking an introductory CS course, adult learners seeking a career change, or anyone who wants to build a strong programming foundation. We cover essential topics such as functions, data types, loops, conditionals, recursion, and basic algorithms, ensuring that by the end of the course, students have both the confidence and competence to continue their computer science journey.
