I think the type of lesson that is most useful when dealing with history is an open conversation. I enjoy telling my students about all the necessary events and information that they should know, while also approaching it from different angles as to make it more engaging and interesting for the student. This also allows the student to ask the questions they acrually want answers to, making them much more likely to remember the material. I also like to send my students a photocopy of the notes I make for myself while preparing for the lesson.
