About Isabella

I studied French and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, having started learning French and Spanish aged 4. I was awarded Top in New Zealand for IGCSE French in 2017, and High Achiever in AS Level Spanish Spanish in 2019, at the NZ Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards. At the end of Year 12, my school, Magdalen College School, Oxford, awarded me the L6th Form prize for Modern Foreign Languages. I graduated with the top grade in French for my year (Distinction 1 in Pre-U Level French). Although I did not study Spanish at university, I have done my best to maintain my level through frequent practice, and through tutoring.

As to my tutoring experience, I began tutoring formally six years ago, in January 2021. My students have ranged from very young learners to adults. I have probably the most experience in preparing students for GCSE and A Level, taking a methodical approach to what are very structure-focused exams. In spite of this, I do try and look outside of the curriculum, as well. What other language tutors do you know who spend their time translating foreign poems and plays, often with the goal of staging them? (I promise acting is entirely optional.) My other hobby is etymology, a vestige of an interest in historical linguistics, which is a feature that renders lessons with me more interesting, as I will always be ready to explain the "why" behind any word or phrase, and if I do not know the answer, then I will be profoundly happy that my student has allowed me to learn something new.

About the lesson

Having a background in both linguistics and languages, I undertake both a theoretical and practical approach to lessons: I believe firmly that unless the structure (the reason, the logic) of the language is understood, it is unlikely to stick in the mind of a student (particularly if the student is approaching the language after the age of 10 - then they are definitely learning it as an L2). Nevertheless, a student will also not progress without immersion, and so homework will consist of watching films in the target language, listening to music in the target language, as well as, naturally, reading articles and literature in the target language. This all makes me sound awfully strict and stuffy, doesn't it? I promise I am nonetheless a very fun teacher, abounding with curious cultural facts and artistic recommendations. You will enjoy learning Spanish with me.

If I am teaching more than one person, the prices are as follows:

2-to-1 - £38/h (£19/h/student)
3-to-1 - £51/h (£17/h/student)
4-to-1 - £60/h (£15/h/student)

If you wish to arrange a small class (more than 4 people), a preferential rate can be arranged, but please note that students tend to learn fastest in private, one-to-one, lessons, particularly if they are studying a language ab initio.
