About Maria
A bit about me! I am a current graduate student studying Educational Research at NIU and received my bachelor's from UC Davis in Psychology and Education. I've taught 5th grade, tutored elementary and middle school students, and helped high school students with their college applications for several years. I love learning what my students are passionate about and helping them reach their goals! I speak English and Spanish, and love to read, crochet, draw, paint, and watch documentaries in my free time!

I build relationships with my students over time, aiming to increase their self-confidence and motivation to make progress toward their goals. I acknowledge my students' strengths, celebrate their successes, and frame mistakes as opportunities to deepen their learning.
A typical lesson with me begins with a general check-in about a student's week and what they need support with most immediately. Then, we create a priority list together to organize our work time. We work through these tasks together, incorporating detailed explanations, reviewing previously learned material, and practicing skills together.
My lessons are geared toward reading and math subjects for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, including college application support.
