About Dr Edward Wickstead

- What kind of experience do you have? I have taught a wide variety of people over the past few years, from relative beginners to advanced-level students, at all ages. I adapt my teaching style for the individual needs for each student, implementing several revision techniques I employed to my own studies. For individual tutoring, I like to obtain details surrounding the course the student is undertaking; allowing me to prioritise topics relevant for the examination board. I have experience in individual tutoring with both GCSE and University students. As a particular example, a student and I initially went through the syllabus for their Biology course, outlining specific strengths and weakness. This allowed my tutoring sessions to primarily focus on topics which needed improving. Taking this approach also allowed me to prepare questions and additional material ahead of time. I am also an undergraduate human physiology lecturer, wherein I teach 1st and 2nd year students human physiology and anatomy. The course covers the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and endocrine systems, alongside laboratory practicals, including measurements of cardiovascular and respiratory function. Currently I am a neuroscience PhD student, wherein my research focuses on the role that neuroinflammation has in the propagation and development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. I currently carry out my work with Queen Mary, University of London; home to some of the country's world leading research scientists. Further, Queen Mary was voted 2nd in the UK for Medicine and 3rd for Dentistry (Guardian University Guide 2017) and one of the UK's leading research intensive medical schools (REF 2014). - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes. Can be viewed on request. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? The British Neuroscience Association, and the British Pharmacological Society

I am a final year neuroscience PhD student with extensive experience in teaching students from secondary school to university. I am a graduate of King's College London, whilst currently carrying out my research at Queen Mary, University of London. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach: - GCSE Science (including Biology, Chemistry and Physics) - GCSE PE Theory (Physiology – i.e. cardiovascular and respiratory health) - A-Level Biology - Undergraduate subjects: Human Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Anatomy, Biomedical Science - Functional skills: University interview preparation, revision planning, essay writing - Tell me about your qualifications. - Bachelor of Science – 1st Class Honours from King's College London (Biomedical Science) - Associate fellow of the Academy For Higher Education A-Level Biology (A) A-Level Chemistry (A) A-Level ICT (A*) - How much do you charge? 1 hour - £40 1.5 hours - £50 2 hours - £60 - Where do you teach? I teach at students' homes, unless an alternative location is preferred. I am based around Ealing but work in Whitechapel, and thus teach students in both West (weekends) and East London (weekdays). - When are you available? I am flexible. I am available both weekday evenings and any time during the weekends. Weekday evening lessons in East London would be easier to travel to following work, unless you live west of Mile End on the Central line. For some students, we stick to a set time each week, whilst others prefer to schedule their next session as and when they know their availability. I am also available on school holidays. - Which ages and levels do you teach? Any ages and any levels, from a complete novice to advanced. Children and adults both welcome. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? GCSE, A-Level (and equivalents), Biomedical/biological science degrees - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. If a face-to-face tutoring lesson cannot take place, I would be more than happy to use Skype or FaceTime as an alternative teaching approach. - Do you have a personal message for students? If you are the parent of a child who is interested in science, and would like some additional support in preparation for their GCSE/A-Level exams, or if you are a student yourself preparing for GCSE/A-Level/Undergraduate or other forms of examination, I can help you realise your full potential. I myself was lucky enough to experience expert tutoring during my studies, to which I have adapted many of their teaching methods to my own ideology. It is essential that anyone with a scientific talent progresses accordingly with a dedicated teacher who can help expand their knowledge and experience. This additionally applies to students who may have a learning disability. I have phonetic dyslexia myself, and thus am well versed in experimenting with differing learning styles. I want to be an example of the fact it doesn't matter who you are, you can succeed in science if you put your mind to it.
