About Michael
I am passionate about the humanities at large. My career has afforded me many opportunities to teach a wide range of courses that provide me with a unique perspective on engaging literature, history, philosophy, psychology, and other related disciplines. Thus, as a professor of English, I remain humble and serious about my work and the ideas that have occupied my attention since I was a younger person. I bring a practical, down-to-earth approach to all the subjects I teach. My teaching philosophy emphasizes textual, evidence-based analysis that applies to professional goals beyond the humanities. With an extensive archive of lecture notes, exercises, and study questions, I prefer an interactive exchange between me and my students. For help in literature, I often begin with basic observations: "what did you notice?" or "what words or phrases stand out?" as a means of initially accessing assigned readings. Then, based on my students' responses, I strive to reinforce their ideas by examining passages and events in the texts. To this end, I seek to build meaning rather than "find" it. Writing courses take a similar approach. My students write evidence-based analysis (sometimes called expository or academic writing) as a means of strengthening their critical thinking skills. I tend to minimize subjective (expressive) writing, reserving that approach for difficult reading assignments. What sets me apart from other tutors includes the following: 20+ years of national teaching experience at both 2-year colleges and 4-year universities. I have worked with incoming college freshmen--and thus know what is required of them for success at the academy--as well as graduate students who struggle with large writing projects. Further, I have worked in multiple writing centers and so understand how to tailor my approaches to teaching for students with different learning styles. My lessons are probably best for high school students seeking to improve their reading/writing skills and expand their knowledge of literature and literary history. For those in college, I am prepared to help with senior thesis assignments and other research-related projects.
