About Ruby
I’m an experienced English teacher and tutor with a PhD in English Literature, a PGCE and almost a decade of teaching experience across schools, further and higher education.
I specialise in helping students develop the strong reading, comprehension, vocabulary, analytical and writing skills they need to succeed in English. I also have extensive experience preparing students for GCSE and A-Level examinations.
For parents considering the 11+ for their child, I offer structured, personalised preparation designed to build both ability and confidence. I work with each child to identify their strengths and areas for development, then tailor lessons and practice accordingly. My aim is not simply to teach children how to answer particular questions, but to develop the underlying English skills that allow them to approach unfamiliar texts and challenging questions with confidence.
I was awarded a University of London teaching prize for the clarity and comprehensiveness of my feedback. I believe excellent tuition should do more than point out mistakes: it should show children how to improve, while giving them the confidence to become increasingly independent learners.
My PGCE has given me a strong grounding in educational strategies and personalised teaching, which I combine with my academic background and extensive teaching experience. I aim to make lessons friendly, encouraging and appropriately challenging, so that children feel supported while making genuine progress.
Alongside teaching, I am a published academic writer and have written scholarly papers and opinion pieces on literature, culture and social issues, including for The i.
Whether your child is beginning to prepare for the 11+, needs to strengthen particular areas of English, or would benefit from additional challenge and exam practice, I offer rigorous but supportive tuition tailored to their individual needs.

My lessons are friendly, engaging and carefully tailored to each child.
For 11+ preparation, lessons can focus on areas such as:
Reading comprehension and inference
Vocabulary and verbal reasoning
Grammar, punctuation and spelling
Writing and sentence construction
Developing clear and sophisticated written answers
Working with unfamiliar and challenging texts
Exam technique, timing and question strategy
Building confidence and independent thinking
I provide all the resources and materials needed, drawing on a substantial collection of teaching resources and exam materials developed throughout my teaching career. Lessons are structured around clear goals, with plenty of opportunities for guided practice and independent work.
I also provide weekly homework through Google Classroom, allowing children to practise between lessons and giving parents a clear sense of their ongoing progress.
I believe that the best preparation is about more than teaching children how to pass an exam. It is about giving them the English skills, confidence and independent learning habits that will continue to benefit them well beyond the 11+.
I teach remotely and offer a free initial consultation so that we can discuss your child's current level, your goals and how I can best support them.
If you are looking for an experienced, approachable English tutor who can combine academic expertise, professional teaching experience and personalised 11+ preparation, please get in touch.

Deadly! Ruby is a fantastic tutor and I would highly recommend her to any parent looking for support with 11+ preparation. She is currently tutoring my 9-year-old daughter and we have been so impressed with her.
Ruby is warm, patient and encouraging, and quickly built a lovely rapport with my daughter. She has a real ability to explain things clearly and in a way that makes sense to her, while also knowing when to challenge her and push her a little further. Lessons are engaging and positive, and my daughter genuinely enjoys working with her, which has made such a difference to her confidence and attitude towards 11+ preparation.
Ruby also has a really good understanding of the 11+ process and what children need to be working towards. She is familiar with the skills and different types of questions required and is able to give clear guidance about how best to approach preparation. As a parent, this is incredibly reassuring, as the 11+ process can feel quite overwhelming and it is helpful to know that there is a clear plan and purpose behind what they are working on.
What I particularly value is that Ruby doesn't take a one-size-fits-all approach. She pays close attention to where my daughter is confident and where she needs more support, and adapts her teaching accordingly. She is very good at identifying gaps in understanding, strengthening the underlying skills and then gradually building up to more challenging 11+ style questions. She also works on exam technique and problem-solving strategies, rather than simply teaching children how to answer particular types of question.
Ruby manages to make the preparation feel structured and purposeful without putting unnecessary pressure on my daughter. At nine, I really wanted someone who could prepare her thoroughly while still keeping learning enjoyable and protecting her confidence, and Ruby strikes that balance brilliantly.
She is also reliable, organised and professional, and it is clear that she puts a great deal of thought into her teaching. I feel very confident that my daughter is developing both the academic skills and the confidence she will need for the 11+, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ruby to other families looking for a knowledgeable, supportive and genuinely excellent tutor.- Aoife is a pleasure to tutor. She is an articulate, thoughtful and very capable student, who already has a good grasp of the verbal and non-verbal reasoning requirements of her exam. I am confident that she is going to make rapid progress.Ruby's response :

Ruby is an excellent tutor. She taught my son A-level English Literature for a year, completely transforming his academic prospects. Max used to struggle to engage with the texts, especially Othello, and found it difficult to concentrate for long periods and memorize quotes. Ruby changed that. She clearly had expert knowledge of the texts and exam boards, and made the material fun and far less intimidating. Thanks to her engaging approach and support, Max improved his grade from a D to a B. We are absolutely delighted that he can now pursue his first-choice university. I couldn’t recommend Ruby highly enough.
Ruby tutored my daughter in GCSE English literature and language last year. Ruby really helped her with her confidence and understanding. She was diligent and always kept me informed of my daughter’s progress and areas of development.
We were delighted with her fantastic success with her exams.Ruby helped me with my son’s English Literature modules—we wanted him to fulfill his potential by giving him the extra support his local school wasn’t able to provide. Ruby supported him online, weekly for nine months, which resulted in him going from a 7 to a 9, which he received this summer.
Max actually enjoyed his time with her and vigorously consents to me recommending her!Excellent tutor - thoughtful, curious, patient and very adaptable. Would wholeheartedly recommend.
Ruby tutored my daughter in A-level English Literature last summer, and I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough. My daughter has dyslexia and had been struggling with the subject, but Ruby was incredibly kind, patient and encouraging. She quickly understood where my daughter needed support and worked with her in a way that really built both her skills and her confidence.
Ruby is an excellent and very knowledgeable tutor. She explained things clearly, adapted her teaching to suit my daughter’s needs, and helped her develop much stronger approaches to analysing texts and structuring her written work. With Ruby’s support, my daughter improved her grade from a B to an A, which was a fantastic achievement.
We were so grateful for Ruby’s help and would highly recommend her, particularly to anyone looking for a skilled, patient and supportive English Literature tutor.
Ruby is an inspiration! She is so knowledgeable and teaches with such enthusiasm and passion. She tailors her teaching to the needs of the individual and has a remarkable insight to their methods of learning. I have been fortunate to witness the attitude of some of her learners change from being initially unenthusiastic to enjoying the process of learning autonomously inspired by Ruby's lessons. Would highly recommend.
