About Jacob

Hello, and welcome! I am a licensed attorney practicing entertainment and intellectual property law, and I am passionate about helping students understand how these areas of law work in the real world.

I earned my Juris Doctor from Belmont University College of Law, where I concentrated on intellectual property, and I am licensed to practice law in Tennessee. Before law school, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Business & Production, along with a second degree in Communication, and spent several years working in music business and talent management capacities. That background gives me a practical understanding of how creative industries operate, not only how the law is written.

In my current practice, I draft, negotiate, and review licensing and settlement agreements for high-profile clients and handle matters involving brand protection and IP enforcement. I have also trained and mentored law clerks, so guiding newer legal minds is something I do regularly and enjoy.

As a tutor, I focus on clarity, confidence, and application. I break down complex concepts into plain language, connect them to real examples, and tailor every session to your goals, whether that means preparing for an exam, mastering a course, or building the knowledge to protect your own creative work. My aim is for you to leave each lesson understanding the material more deeply and feeling more capable than when you started.

I look forward to working with you!

Teaching Methodology: I teach IP and entertainment law the way it’s practiced, not just the way it’s tested. I start with the core doctrine (copyright, trademark, right of publicity, licensing), then apply it to real-world situations: a sample license, an infringement dispute, etc. I use two primary techniques throughout:

(1) Issue-spotting drills: I give you a short fact pattern and you identify the issues, the governing rules, and the likely outcome. This works for exams and for real contract review.
(2) Plain-English explanations: I explain complex doctrine in everyday terms before layering in the legal vocabulary, so you understand it and can then use it with confidence.

Sample Lesson Structure (60 min):
- Check-in and goals (5 min): Review what you’re working on, whether that’s an exam, a course, a project, or a deal.
- Concept review (15 min): Clarify the topic of the day, such as copyright eligibility, trademark infringement, or work-for-hire.
- Applied practice (25 min): Work through a hypothetical or a sample agreement, with you doing the analysis and me guiding.
- Feedback and takeaways (10 min): Cover what you got right, where the reasoning slipped, and how to fix it.
- Next steps (5 min): Targeted practice problems or reading before we meet again.

Each plan is adjusted/tailored to the individual's goals.
