About Madeline
Over the past five years, I have supported international students and Spanish-speaking immigrants in improving their English skills, helping them gain confidence, adapt to new cultural environments, and find community with other English speakers.
My Spanish professors played a crucial role in fostering my love for language learning and intercultural exchanges by providing me with the essential tools, motivation, and enthusiasm to engage with the world through the Spanish language. The instructors at Middlebury had a profound impact on my education experience by fostering relentless curiosity. Their passion for teaching and commitment to providing ample learning opportunities influenced me to become an English teacher because I hope to help students understand the world and themselves through the English language, in the same way, my professors did for me.
I began teaching English during my sophomore year of college as a member of VCU Globe, a living-learning community promoting inclusive and diverse environments on campus for cross-cultural exchange. As a volunteer conversational partner, I met with international students every week to explore the city, attend events and festivals, and share meals, all while practicing their English skills in real-life settings. Collaborating with these students inspired me to create innovative lesson plans catering to their distinct interests, goals, and academic backgrounds.
For the past year, I have been a conversational tutor and teacher at the Washington English Center (WEC), an organization dedicated to providing affordable English lessons to adult immigrants. I have worked with adults of varying English levels which has helped me further develop a versatile and adaptable teaching method. As an English teacher, I am committed to creating a positive learning environment and celebrating my students' progress as they work towards their goals. I believe that building a culture of trust and dependability is also critical to student success, as it creates a supportive and collaborative atmosphere where students feel comfortable approaching me with any questions, concerns, or requests for additional resources.

As an English teacher, I use a mix of teaching methods to ensure my students are able to develop and practice their skills in a variety of ways. This also allows me to tailor my lesson plans and teaching strategies to your specific learning style. My lessons can be tailored to students of all ages, academic backgrounds, and English levels.
I am committed to creating a positive learning environment and celebrating my students' progress as they work towards their goals. I enjoy selecting the topics of our lessons together to ensure the content is interesting and beneficial for you and your goals.
Some teaching methods I often incorporate are:
1. student-centered - this gives you the opportunity to have input on what material you learn and how you learn it. This allows us to incorporate your interests into our lessons.
2. content-based instruction - a topic is chosen to be the theme throughout our lessons and is used as a way for you to practice your listening, reading, and communication all through learning about that topic.
3. task or project-based learning -this is a very hands-on way for you to work through questions or tasks that foster collaboration and creativity
4. multi-sensory approach - incorporating all of your senses into the language learning process. this is a more playful way of learning that is especially helpful for visual learners
As an avid language learner, I know how challenging it can be to learn another language. I strive to build a culture of trust and dependability so my students feel comfortable approaching me with any questions, concerns, or requests for additional resources.
I am here to support you and cheer you on during every step of your language-learning process!
