About Sophie
I have a master's degree in science and I am currently studying for a bachelor's in English Literature (beginning a master's in English Literature in September 2023). I have excellent A-Levels in English Literature to support my own studies at university. My breadth of qualifications across subjects, and my experience teaching at university level for 5 years, result in my English lessons confidently preparing you for your journey both in academia and in everyday life.
Aside from my teaching experience, I have mentored many students, both academically and as their professional life-coach. I have also been involved in national STEM competitions for school children - I used to write questions and manage the day-to-day organisation, and I would take part in festivals aimed at teaching school pupils all about university and what you can learn there. I have always tried to be involved with volunteering - most recently with the mental health charity Mind, the homelessness charity Shelter and Citizens Advice. I don't like to be sat still!
Above all, I have a passion for English Literature. I am patient and approachable, and any plan for your learning will be arrived at together, so you can always be in control and work at the pace you are comfortable at.
I am open to online sessions or face-to-face in the Swansea area. I am flexible as to time (weekdays or weekends at anytime). Money should never be an obstacle to learning, I will try to work with you if you have any concerns. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Reading, writing and analysing literature successfully are rooted in confidence and passion - no matter your age! Finding what makes you curious and motivated about each topic will occur alongside our informal assessment of your current literacy and language skills and what your goals are. We will then address any weaknesses by drawing on these interests, allowing you to feel in control of your own learning.
Areas of development we may address include:
Writing: your creative writing techniques, how you develop characters and setting, your understanding of letters/articles/narratives, your use of vocabulary and punctuation
Comprehension: how to read extracts with purpose, how to retrieve information, your understanding of what questions are asking and different question words
Reading: your knowledge of grammar rules, how you recognise literary techniques and perform literary analysis, how you can "read as a writer", your understanding of structure and form, how you can explore themes
We will use a wide range of resources - reading and writing doesn't have to be isolating and can certainly be fun - so you may not always feel like you are developing skills. However, as the importance of grades cannot be understated (particularly if you're an older pupil), considerable time will also be spent focusing on literature extracts, exam techniques and past paper questions.
Through these questions you'll begin to explore the relationship between language and literature. For example, effectively analysing poetry will teach you how writers utilise language to achieve striking effects. Therefore, depending on your interests and motivations, new ideas can always be introduced and framed in a way you find engaging. To study set texts, we will combine my personal passion for literary analysis with your learning by delving into them (whether novel, poem or play) together, we will ask each other questions until you have developed your own ideas. Entering an exam with an great understanding of a text, a mind full of opinions (backed up with evidence), and some thought out arguments for common questions will achieve so much more than some memorised popular quotations!
How will each topic be discussed? We will break down each topic into digestible chunks and build them back up again once the foundations have been laid. In each step, resources and questions will initially be aimed at your ability level - your confidence in being able to answer questions is key! However, this confidence will allow you to explore the advanced material that follows, ensuring you're are constantly challenged and never static in your progression.
You deserve to feel enthusiastic, confident and knowledgeable about what you're studying, and the first step is having a tutor with that expertise and passion!
