About Tawny

I am a patient ESL instructor equipped with the knowledge that learning a language takes time and practice. I am a native English speaker from the United States, and I have a bachelor's degree in the principles and methods of language education, with a minor in online education. I am also TESOL certified.
I have been working as an online ESL tutor for some 10 years and have instructed hundreds of students. I have experience teaching both adults and children. Further, I am able to teach even very young children or true beginners and am skilled in the use of TPR. I have also been participating in a progressive school for improving teaching ability for over fifteen years, and have served as a full-time volunteer teacher for a worldwide organization for over fifteen years as well. This educational program has allowed me to put different teaching methods into action, progressively sharpening my abilities and adapting my teaching styles to fit the unique needs of each student.
I am currently residing in the United States. However, I had the privilege of living abroad for 9+ years. During this time, I was able to meet many ESL students and see first-hand the unique challenges that they often faced in real-life situations. I also saw how many of the things they had learned in a classroom setting, sadly, failed them miserably. This fresh perspective further fueled my determination to improve my ability as a teacher.
I strive to utilize only teaching methods that actually work. This also means avoiding a cookie-cutter approach. I like to take time to get to know my students' goals and challenges. Everyone has their own unique learning style and pace. Therefore, I work hard to customize a lesson plan that is perfect for each student as an individual.

About the lesson

Private Lessons:

I am able to teach students of any age or learning level. This includes even very young children or true beginners, and I am skilled in the use of TPR.

My lessons are customized to fit the needs and goals of each individual student.

Lesson plans may include but are not limited to :

-Vocabulary expansion and retention
-Accent reduction
-Conversation practice
-Listening comprehension
-Targeted grammar practice
- English starter program for true beginners

Group Classes:

I also offer English immersion group lessons. These lessons allow students to focus on targeted conversation practice in a group setting! Helpful suggestions , explanations, constructive corrections, and sincere commendation are provided throughout each lesson to help students progress and gain confidence!

Group Classes FAQ:

1. How long are these classes?

- Classes last for one hour

2. How much do group classes cost?

- Group classes cost a flat rate of $80 per hour regardless of how many students attend.

3. Who will my classmates be?

- Classmates are chosen by you. You can invite your friends, family, workmates or classmates!

4. How many students can attend a group class?

-I do not set a maximum amount of students that are permitted to attend each class. However, in order to give each student sufficient talk time, I recommend group classes to consist of no more than 5 active participants.

5. Does everyone in the class need to participate?

- No. Not everyone has to actively participate. I will only call on students who raise their hands to participate. If any student would like to attend as a listener only, that is no problem. Participation is never mandatory, and I will never put anyone on the spot.

6. What will we talk about?

-Conversation topics are chosen by the students! I can provide sample conversation topics to choose from, or if there is something specific that you would like to talk about-let me know! These classes are highly customizable, and I am happy to incorporate any requests in order to help my students reach their goals.

7. Do my classmates and I have to be in the same physical location to attend a class?

-No! Group classes are held virtually. Each student may attend on a separate device if preferred.
