About Oluwatosin

I am a qualified Business Studies teacher with a PGCE and QTS and over five years of teaching experience across KS3, GCSE and A-Level. I have taught in both state and independent schools and have also worked with students from different countries and educational backgrounds.

Business is a subject I genuinely enjoy teaching because it connects what students learn in the classroom with what happens in the real world.

I have experience of running my own business. I use this experience in my lessons to help students understand that business is not just about learning definitions. We can look at why a business makes certain decisions, what happens when things go wrong and how factors such as finance, marketing, competition and customers affect those decisions.

I have taught Business Studies to students preparing for GCSE, A-Level and Pearson BTEC qualifications. I also work as a Pearson Business Studies External Examiner, which has improved my understanding of assessment and what examiners are looking for in students' answers.

In my most recent teaching role, 85% of my students exceeded their predicted grades. I don't believe this happens simply by giving students more work. It comes from identifying what a student understands, finding the gaps and then working on those areas with them.

My aim as a tutor is therefore quite simple: to help students understand Business Studies rather than just memorise it.

About the lesson

My lessons are personalised around the student rather than following the exact same structure every time.

Before introducing new content, I want to understand what the student already knows and where they are struggling. This helps me decide whether we need to revisit a topic, work on application, practise exam questions or focus on examination technique.

For GCSE and A-Level students, exam technique is an important part of my lessons. I use past examination questions to help students understand what a question is asking, how to structure their answers and how to apply their Business Studies knowledge to the case study.

I also focus heavily on application. For example, if we are studying marketing, I don't want a student to simply tell me what market segmentation means. I want them to be able to apply it to a real business and explain why a business might use a particular strategy.

For BTEC students, I can support learners with understanding the specification, applying business theory, preparing for examinations and developing their written responses.

I also have experience supporting students with different learning needs, including SEN and EAL learners. I adapt explanations, resources and activities when needed rather than expecting every student to learn in the same way.

At the end of a lesson, students should know what they have improved and what they need to work on next. I may provide exam questions, revision activities or a specific task to complete before our next session.

It was a real pleasure teaching Clive’s children Business Studies. I had the opportunity to work with his daughter, who was in Year 13 studying Business Studies IGCSE, as well as her twin brothers in Year 10. His daughter was attentive, engaged, and always approached lessons with a positive attitude. Teaching the boys was equally enjoyable.
