About CATHERINE

I have over five years of success tutoring adult learners to prepare and pass teacher certification/licensing exams. Many of these students were recently admitted to MAT programs as returning adult students changing careers. I helped students successfully obtain test accommodations who needed them. I also work with these clients to help them build a portfolio of work for job interviews and/or assist them with graduate school applications. I hold doctoral level teacher certification in two areas in my state of residence and I have middle grades and high school teaching experience as well as AP teaching experience. I bring 30+ years of diverse teaching experience with me to your sessions. I have taught at a community college, a small regional university and two research I (R1) large public universities. I have worked with at-risk for failure adult learners as well as gifted middle school, high school, and collegiate honors program students. I have had great success in the past with nontraditional adult learners who come back to school for additional training/degree or certificate programs. I have an extremely diverse educational background as well as advanced training in multiple disciplines that make me uniquely qualified to teach, remembering that teaching is a conversation that you have with your students in contrast to lecturing which is talking at your students. Effective instruction should always be student-centered and individuated to meet each student's needs. I strive to create an intellectually and emotionally safe space for student learning, helping students to understand that small failures are inevitable as we all fail every day at least once; further, we learn more through our failures than successes as each is an opportunity for intellectual and personal growth. My commitment to student learning has been officially recognized by the University of Alabama, College of Arts and Sciences for my teaching efforts with the Biology Program and by the University of Georgia (the one campus award winner for 2005) with the Excellence in Teaching Award (based on my work with Marine Science courses). I have also been awarded a Service Learning Fellowship as well as an Online Learning Fellowship during my tenure at UGA. I was also recognized by the UGA Disability Resource Center 2008-2009 for my work with their student clients enrolled in courses that I taught over a number of years. I believe that every student deserves to be academically successful. As a person living with a medical disability who was in college for many years prior to the passage of the ADA, I know all too well how difficult it can be to complete assignments or professional work-related tasks while having to deal with IV treatments and hospitalizations. I think my personal experience has shaped my understanding of the many kinds of challenges that students and adult learners face today. I work hard to be part of the solution, not the origin of a problem for my student(s).

A serious effort to determine the client's learning style, any perceived or real barriers to testing success, and I let the client determine their priorities for each lesson. I provide each client with positive feedback as well as constructive critiques for test-taking skill improvement and/or content deficit mastery. Each session and client is different so the approach needs to be different, determined by the client and myself as we are in an educational partnership. Every effort is made to establish an emotionally and intellectually supportive learning environment. After all, I work for you! All lessons will begin with an overview of the lesson or subject area. I will ask general questions to gauge the level of your understanding of the subject at hand. I will also ask you to describe what teachers who were effective in helping you to learn difficult or detailed content did that helped you to be successful. I will ask you for feedback about how you feel the lesson is going as we move through each lesson; your feedback is essential to helping me to create a learning environment that works for you. Following the initial lesson which is 1 hour and free of charge, all future sessions will be structured as follows: A. brief review of previous lesson stressing ideas, concepts, and/or skills that will carry forward into the new lesson. B. An advanced organizer that will help you organize the new material for the lesson - can be an outline, rubric, or assignment we will work through as well as provide context for why this is critical information by illustrating how this information/skill may intersect with your everyday life (news, social media, film, music, etc.). C. overview of key vocabulary - can be in the form of a quiz with feedback D. guided practice with the content (essay if conceptual), working problems if quantitative E. Lesson summary F. Independent practice = homework or practice test with clearly communicated expectations and due date G. solicit feedback from client H. set next meeting I always call my new clients first to find out the following information: 1. The client's preferred method of learning - video, lecture, review, practice problems, and/or some combination of all of the above. 2. I request that the client send me their course syllabus or project prospectus with some detail regarding where they feel they are having a problem or experiencing a disconnect between what they think they are required to do (as far as an assignment or research paper) and what the instructor is actually requiring of them (usually based on a grading rubric or a sample exam or assignment). 3. I always ask for a list of the top 3 concepts or problem types that need immediate attention. 4. If the client is within a reasonable driving distance, I do offer the option of face-to-face instruction if that is preferable to ZOOM meetings (with audio transcript and video recordings provided to the client post lesson). 5. I will always end with an assignment for both of us: (1) I will provide the client with support materials in the form of handouts, visual references such as figures and flow charts, and videos which can help clarify concepts or walk the client through detailed hand calculations related to assigned problem sets and (2) follow-up materials or research that the client needs to complete prior to our next meeting. 6. I will always endeavor to demonstrate how the information is used in the daily life of the average college student - direct applicability is important as it establishes relevancy of the subject matter. If I know any historical context for the development of a scientific theory, research method, or statistical analysis technique, I will share this with the student(s) as it tends to make the subject matter more interesting. Example: The one-sample t-test was developed by the Guinness Corporation to determine whether batches of stout met their company standard for sugar and alcohol content. Who knew? Or that Benjamin Franklin created the first map of coastal currents on the Atlantic coast of North America. Why? He was postmaster general of the newly independent colonies and needed to understand how to move the mail among the 13 colonies by land as well as by sea. My opinion of a person is not related in any way to their academic performance as there are many aspects of non-academic life that can prevent students from being successful. My job is to help the student find solutions and move forward - this frequently requires the student to be honest about what is going on with them outside of the classroom and I can endeavor to help them locate services on their campus or at their school to help support them through this challenge.
