About Emily

My teaching approach is structured, engaging, and supportive. I guide students through a clear, step-by-step learning process, ensuring they understand not only what to do but why they are doing it. I explicitly model the "thinking aloud" strategy, demonstrating how successful readers and writers approach texts, analyse questions, and construct well-developed responses. This enables students to develop the confidence and independence to apply these skills in lessons and examinations.

Alongside building subject knowledge, I teach practical exam techniques that help students remain calm and focused under pressure. I share proven strategies for what to do if they go blank in an exam, showing them how to break questions into manageable steps, organise their ideas, and regain confidence. As an examiner, I also provide insider tips on what examiners are looking for and the common mistakes to avoid, helping students maximise every mark available.

I pride myself on creating a positive, supportive, and challenging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to think independently. My lessons are engaging, well-structured, and supported by a wealth of carefully selected resources, including model answers, exam-style questions, retrieval activities, and personalised revision materials. This allows me to adapt every lesson to suit each student's learning style and goals.

About the lesson

I am a highly experienced English teacher, Head of Department, and private tutor, specialising in KS3 and GCSE English Language and English Literature. With over six years of experience as a GCSE exam marker alongside six years of successful private tutoring, I have an in-depth understanding of the examination process and what examiners are looking for.

My lessons are carefully tailored to each student's individual needs, whether they require support in building confidence, strengthening core literacy skills, improving analytical writing, or achieving the highest GCSE grades. I have extensive experience teaching students of all abilities, from those needing additional support to high-achieving students aiming for Grades 8–9.

My teaching approach is engaging, supportive, and structured. I begin by identifying each student's strengths and areas for development before creating a personalised learning plan. Lessons combine clear explanations, guided practice, regular retrieval activities, model answers, and targeted feedback to ensure steady progress. I have built a comprehensive bank of high-quality resources, including revision materials, practice questions, model responses, and exam-style activities, allowing me to adapt every lesson to suit different learning styles and goals.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged if required, particularly during exam preparation periods.
