About Shayla
I majored from a Liberal Arts College with a B.A. in Classics and an emphasis on Latin. My undergraduate focused mostly on translating and interpreting ancient Literature. This led me to study abroad in Greece for my senior year, which put me on the path to working abroad. After Greece, I moved to Russia, where I got my CELTA and trained to become an ESL teacher. I lived and taught Cambridge speaking exams (CAE, FCE, etc) and general English to adults in Moscow for 2 years before moving to China. In China, I taught ESL to adults for 4 years. I, then, transitioned to teaching English elective classes (Journalism, Drama, Speech, etc.) in American curriculum international schools with Common Core standards for 2 years. Wanting to challenge myself further, I moved to a British curriculum school, where I taught IGCSE and A-level Literature for 6 years. I was also a mentor to several teachers for 2 years in the Cambridge PDQ program, which is a teaching qualification course for less experienced teachers. For the past 3 years, I've been certified by Cambridge as the PDQ program leader and helped over 10 teachers get their teaching qualifications with a focus on student-centered teaching and active learning.

Firstly, I like to establish steps and stages to achieving my student's ultimate goals.
From there, I plan active learning lessons using gamification for review and discussion-based activities for developing further understanding. I assess students at each stage, so that both of us can see their strengths and weaknesses and adjust my lessons accordingly.
I prepare PPTs, provide annotations of texts, and help students create study material so they can study more efficiently.
I particularly love teaching CIE IGCSE and A-level Literature curriculum. I love teaching Shakespeare and poetry in particular. In recent years, I've taught the following texts in depth:
