About Sara
About Me – as a teacher
Why I Teach — And Why It Matters for You
I was once that child staring out of the classroom window, wishing I were outside in the sunshine. School felt full of distractions, and although people told me I was “bright,” my exam results didn’t reflect it. My reports described me as a daydreamer, someone “not suited” to higher education.
Everything changed when I met a teacher who helped me understand how I learn. Not how everyone learns — how I learn. That shift opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Once I understood my own learning style, I flourished. My confidence grew, my curiosity expanded, and my academic life transformed. That experience shaped the teacher and tutor I am today.
My Teaching Philosophy
We all learn differently. Our brains make sense of the world in unique ways, and when we honour that, learning becomes exciting rather than intimidating.
My goal is to help you:
• Understand your own learning style
• Build confidence in your abilities
• Develop strong knowledge and critical thinking skills
• Enjoy the process of discovery
I teach because I’m endlessly curious — about people, ideas, and how things work. Sharing that curiosity is one of the greatest joys of my life.
My First Lesson: Two Rabbit Ears
My first real teaching moment happened when I was sixteen, trying to teach a young child how to tie their shoelaces. I approached it with the confidence of a Girl Guide patrol leader and quickly realised it wasn’t that simple. What worked for me didn’t work for them. So I adapted. I swapped technical explanations for imagination: two rabbit ears, a playful loop, a moment of laughter. And suddenly, it clicked. That moment taught me something profound — learning becomes easier when the language is accessible and the environment is relaxed.
Teaching Without Hierarchy
Years later, as an anaesthetic nurse, I taught a junior doctor for the first time. It reinforced something I already believed: learning thrives when hierarchy disappears. When people feel safe, respected, and supported, knowledge flows naturally.
A Lifetime of Teaching
From young children to teenagers, from university students to seasoned professionals, I’ve taught people at every stage of life. Each learner brings their own story, strengths, and challenges. For me, teaching is the beginning of a discovery journey — not just for the student, but for both of us.

My Teaching Approach
I use a coaching style of teaching that focuses on understanding your current level of knowledge and how you learn best. At the start of our work together, we will identify what you want to achieve and plan lessons that help you make the most progress in the time available.
Our sessions are collaborative. Rather than delivering fixed content, I work with you to create a learning plan that supports your goals, similar to a personal development plan.
During the first session we will explore your learning preferences and identify the materials that will support you most effectively. For example, if you learn best by listening and discussion, I will not simply provide a long list of textbooks and research articles. Instead, I will adapt the learning approach to suit the way you absorb information most easily.
Teaching Experience
I have been teaching within clinical practice since 1997. My early teaching experience began in 1987 when I taught First Aid and Principles of Flight to Air Training Corps cadets.
I also hold a TEFL qualification, which allows me to confidently work with students from a wide range of educational and language backgrounds.
Academic Background
I hold a Master’s degree in Education and previously worked as a Module Lead for postgraduate Coaching and Leadership at the University of Plymouth.
My role also included:
• Deputy Programme Lead for Nursing Associate Apprenticeships
• Teaching across postgraduate and professional Nursing programmes level 6&7.
• Teaching across Undergraduate Adult Nursing programmes (Years 1–4)
• Personal Tutoring undergraduate and thesis students.
I have taught a wide range of subjects including:
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Clinical practice and professional development
• Leadership and coaching
• Advanced practice and primary care
Lesson Structure
Typical lesson length: 40–60 minutes
Each session begins with a short progress check-in where you can share successes, challenges, or questions from your independent study.
We will then agree on the focus of the session. Lessons are discussion-based and designed to build critical thinking and confidence in applying knowledge to real clinical situations.
I will ask you questions to explore your understanding and encourage deeper thinking around the topic.
Example Lesson
Topic: Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice – Learning Environments
The session begins with a check-in to discuss your progress with the topic.
Before the lesson, you will receive a short article describing a case study where student nurses arrive on a ward unexpectedly and staff were not prepared for their placement.
During the session we will:
• Discuss your thoughts about what happened in the scenario
• Explore how this situation might affect student nurses
• Identify factors that may contribute to poor placement preparation
We will then examine these factors using a simple framework that considers:
• organisational systems
• leadership and staff roles
• the learning environment
• resources and equipment
• financial pressures
Finally, we will explore:
• how organisations can better support staff to prepare for student placements
• what student nurses can do to manage unexpected situations
• the professional and legal implications, including reference to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session, you will:
• Gain a balanced understanding of a common issue in nursing education
• Develop critical thinking about real clinical situations
• Build confidence discussing professional responsibilities and standards
• Strengthen skills that support lifelong learning in healthcare practice
