About Eilidh

Since I could talk, I've always had a profound love for singing. So, it's hardly surprising that I pursued a music degree from The University of Glasgow, where I had the privilege of expanding my knowledge in various musical styles through theory and performance. Among all genres, opera resonates with me the most, and I've been fortunate enough to take on lead roles in many productions at the Edinburgh Fringe. Additionally, I find immense joy in performing art songs and lieder, and I'm proud to have been part of my university's prestigious chapel choir.

However, my love for music and singing goes beyond the classical realm. I have valuable experience as the lead singer in a youth jazz band, where I sang jazz standards with great enthusiasm. Furthermore, I've had the pleasure of sharing my passion for folk music at local gigs, with Joni Mitchell's works holding a special place in my heart.

In my lessons, my primary goals revolve around nurturing your confidence and facilitating progress. Your comfort and happiness are my top priorities, and I want you to feel at ease during our sessions. If there's anything about my teaching that doesn't quite resonate with you, please feel free to share your thoughts openly, and never be afraid to ask questions!

About the lesson

My teaching focuses on developing a strong vocal technique to give you as the student a solid foundation with which to sing any repertoire of your choice with confidence. I teach from beginner to upper-intermediate level singing in a range of styles that I am experienced in.

When I take on new students I like to get to know the individual and their voice, so I will usually begin our first lesson by asking the student about what kind of style/repertoire of music they sing/would like to sing, as well as asking a bit about their singing goals. I always encourage my students to think of at least a few key goals, whether that’s to have better breath control or more confidence on stage. If you’re not sure, I can help you to identify some goals to work towards. In the first lesson I will also do some vocal exercises and scales with you to get an understanding of the range and qualities of your unique voice, and if we have time after all that, will work on a piece that you have requested in advance of the lesson.

As we progress, you will always get to decide what you would like to sing, and as I get to know you, I will also make suggestions of songs that I think you would enjoy singing and that would suit your voice well. We will work through your chosen songs to identify the difficulties within them, as well as the reasons behind why you are finding them difficult, so that we can apply appropriate vocal technique to aleviate the issue and improve the quality of your voice overall.

I highly encourage my students to seek out live performance opportunities if that is something they are comfortable with, even if that confidence might only build up after a longer period of time. Depending on your repertoire style, I can help you to identify performance opportunities suited to you, perhaps in a local music group or an open mic night at your local bar. Singing in front of an audience is just the best way to build your confidence as a singer and get out of your comfort zone, and it’s such a contrasting feeling from singing alone in your bathroom!
