About Jennifer

Jennifer Bell (MA Cantab) has been teaching singers and songwriters of all ages and levels for over 15 years, in educational settings and privately. She has worked with performance artists, professional singers, theatre companies, theatres and ensembles. She has extensive experience in the Music and Arts sectors, specialising in working with vocal ensembles.

She is also an accredited Somatic Inquiry and Forest Therapy Practitioner (Shinrin Yoku), and has developed therapeutic methods of working with singers that incorporate mindfulness and somatic integration.

As a composer, creative producer and artist she creates song portraits of people drawn from verbatim material. She specialises in close-harmony vocal compositions, through which she chronicles places or groups of people.

Her practice was the focus of Michael Rosen’s BBC Radio 4’s ‘Word of Mouth’, following her song tour of The Houses of Parliament, ‘Mouthpiece’. Her BBC Radio docu-drama ‘Bread and Butter’ was shortlisted for Best Drama Production (BBC Radio and Music Awards) and made an international pre-selection for Best Radio Drama (Grand Prix Nova).

She stages arts events and performances in unusual locations, such as on buses, in offices and in living rooms, and she has worked nationally and internationally at arts venues such as Bristol Old Vic (UK), Seedworks (USA), and Sophiensaele (DE). She is also a professional bass player, singer and arranger for a number of bands.

She holds an MA (Cantab), Enhanced DBS check, Professional Indemnity Insurance, and Public Liability Insurance.

About the lesson

Hello! My name is Jennifer Bell, singing teacher, vocal therapy practitioner and composer.

I work with people of all ages (8yrs+ to seniors), from beginners and the terrified, to artists and professional singers. You are warmly invited to come to work with me, regardless of your age or ability.

We will refine technique, remove emotional and psychological barriers, and prioritise the pleasure of singing. With 15+ years of experience, I work in-person and online across the UK and internationally with students to develop their practice and use game-changing methods to achieve their singing goals.

You will gain in-depth knowledge of what you are actually doing when you sing, and learn the skills to find a voice you never knew you could have. We will focus on technique, anatomy, and most importantly, seeking pleasure!

Sessions include:
- Lesson in how the voice works
- Warm up
- Technical Exercises
- Song practice
- Honing singing/performance skills
- Suggestions for home practice
- A PDF of bespoke session notes.

We will take into consideration your personal relationship to your voice, so that sessions can be tailored to your specific needs around singing.

If you want to go deeper, I work with voice trauma and fear through somatic inquiry and gentle exercises. I understand that the body has done its job in keeping you safe, and through trusting your voice again, we can help you to be heard, and to actually enjoy vocal expression. This is life-changing work that extends beyond singing.

There is something for everyone, including fresh and fun ways to get singing, and opportunities to bring the joy of song into your life!
