About Cheryl
I am very personal, friendly and can debunk any ideas about tricks needed to do well on the ACT/SAT/SSAT, etc. I have been tutoring for many years and have seen these tests evolve for better and then for worse. I am certified in two states, work here for the San Diego Library and several tutoring organizations. I have helped students in CA get into Princeton, Stanford, NYU, UCLA, VA Tech, Berkeley and many other strong colleges. If you are willing to listen and work hard, you will get your best scores!!
I was lucky to know someone who worked in administration at a small Catholic school for girls who gave me a chance to become the school's first art and design teacher.
Thirty years of classroom teaching and one to one tutoring, writing SAT material for a tutoring company, running a private tutoring company and enjoying teenagers. I earned a BS in Creative Arts and History, an MEd in Teaching, took coursework at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, Temple University/Tyler School of Art and the Barnes Foundation in Philadephia, PA.

I access how much experience they have had so far with the test. If they have previous scores and their score reports, we can use that material for a discussion of where to improve for more points. We also consider the timeframe for prepping and make a plan for how many sessions and practice tests they can expect. If they are beginning a college search, we discuss possibilities and check college websites for scores needed for admission.
All ages from pre-K to adult, all types of learners, students for remediation and enrichment. I feel that I can help teenagers the most since I was a teacher and high school principal for many years.
Have a meeting to see if the student and tutor feel comfortable together. Go over test results together and make a possible game plan. Ask the tutor for some local success stories and some parents/students to contact for references.
I was having a first session with a young woman who has applied to the Air Force Academy and wants to raise her ACT scores. If she can get a higher score this year as a senior in highschool, she will be allowed to enter the academy directly but otherwise she must spend a year in their prep academy. We analyzed her ACT diagnostic test, made note of questions she had missed in the English session and then practiced the identical types of questions. She tried one section of an ACT English test and got them all correct. That was a confidence booster to get her believing!

I currently charge $65. hour for private one to one tutoring. I arrived at this price once I learned what the local tutoring agencies are charging which can range for $45. to $90. per hour.
