About Lanae

In May 2023, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rutgers University - Newark with a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice; my major was Criminal Justice while I completed a double minor in Social Justice and Sociology. I've been tutoring for over 8 years now, and I firmly believe that there are multiple ways to address a topic, not just one way. Therefore, when I'm tutoring a student(s), I appeal to their specific learning style which allows me to better understand how they are processing the information.

I enjoy helping people become better versions of themselves. The goal is always to see kids defeat education, not have education defeat the kids. They have brilliant minds, but the way that they process information may not be what everyone is accustomed to. Making sure that they know that someone believes in them is major to me. In addition to tutoring, I have also been mentoring for approximately six years now. On top of studying Juvenile Law and attending Law School, my aim is to help individuals navigate through higher education, so that the transition into higher education is one that is as seamless as possible.

I love helping people so in my free time, I would help my friends and family in certain trouble areas. I realized that tutoring is something that I'm good at when I started seeing the changes in my students as well as changes in their academics.

I've been tutoring for well over 8 years, specifically in Math, English, History, and Science, though I work more in Math and English than the other subjects. As far as training goes, I worked as an intern at RISE Summer Camp where we sought to help the literacy levels of each child increase. The Camp helped build confidence and self-esteem while also reviewing essential skills needed in everyday life.

About the lesson

When first working with new students, my first objective is to get to know them and their individual skills. Therefore, the first session is spent doing an assessment so that I can further anazlyze their skills, figure out their strengths and trouble areas, and also so that I can learn how I can best teach them. Every child learns differently; some are visual learners, some learn from reading the text, some learn through constant practice. Following the initial session, we will begin going over fundamentals, the fundamentals completely dependant upon their grade levels.

I've worked with students of all ages and backgrounds. The key is to work to the student's learning style and to be very careful with languaging of information, which has proved to be the most effective method since I've started tutoring.

The advice I would offer to a student looking to hire a teacher in my area(s) of expertise is to not solely look at price when choosing the best tutor. Choose someone who is looking to impact your life beyond "1+1=2". Also look for someone who firmly believes in progress over perfection; we won't always get things 100% correct, but it's so long as we learn from our mistakes and past events that we can work on being better versions of ourselves.
