About Ken

I see a lot of young kids lacking in their skills thus giving up the game of basketball way to soon. If they had a mentor who worked with them early in their development on the basics of dribbling, passing, and shooting, they would be much more inclined to develop their skills and stay in the game. Success early on encourages work ethic and persistence to reach their dreams.

I have been working with kids for over 35 years and in that time, I have had very few who quit. From my best student (who tried out with the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves) to those who just enjoyed being on a team who continually improved to win a championship or make the play-offs, most have complimented my coaching in helping them not just develop their game but also their character.

I was blessed to play basketball from junior high to college. I was All-State in Junior High leading our team to the state quarter-finals and was honored as an a District Most Valuable Player. In high school I received All-District honors and earned a 2 year scholarship as a walk-on in college. In my coaching career I was honored to be an assistant coach at Goodpasture High School where we were Tennessee State Runners-up in 1978. Our team broke 6 state tournament records that year. Later, I became Head Coach at Dyer County High School in Tennessee where I inherited a team that had lost 34 in row having the longest losing streak in the state. My second year we finished 14-10 and I had two All-District players and one Honorable Mention All-State. The HM All-Stater went on a 4 year Basketball Scholarship to Bethel College and was twice MVP for the Volunteer State Conference averaging over 25 points per game both seasons. This was the same conference with teams like Lipscomb and Belmont (both NCAA Tournament qualifiers). After college he was blessed with a try-out with the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves. I later became Basketball Varsity Assistant at Del Rio High School in Texas and then Head Basketball Coach at Royse City High School. The two years I was there we made the play-offs as district runners-up both years. I was Co-Coach of the Year my second year and I had 5 players honored as All-District. After several more years in different rebuilding situations I became a high school Assistant Principal for 17 years before I retired in 2011.

I retired after 35 years in education as either a Teacher, Coach, and/or Administrator. I am presently a substitute teacher in Denton ISD and Lake Dallas ISD.

as Co-Coach of the Year while coaching at Royse City High School and our team making the play-offs for the first time in a decade. We went to the play-offs two consecutive the two years I coached there.

It is extemely satisfying to me to be able to watch students/players improve their game. The relationship we develop over their time learning the game is even more special as I get to know their character and help them with their lifes goals. My hope as their coach is that they take away more than just the fundamentals of a game but their transfering their work habits to whatever lifes work they choose to lead. I have been blessed to have coached doctors, nurses, accountants, professional musicians and singers, private business owners, ministers, teachers, coaches, business managers, NASA Sr. Technology Executives, Google executives, housewives, dads, moms, etc.

After earning a BA in Physical Education and Biology from Harding College, I worked as a teacher/coach for 18 years and then received a Masters in Education and worked as an assistant principal for 17 more years.  As a player, student, coach, and administrator, I feel I have a well-rounded understanding and the experience that is needed to produce successful students in the game of basketball.  After college and while coaching, I attended many Basketball Coaching Clinics and Workshops and while at Royse City I hosted a McDonalds Basketball Camp.  I also worked basketball camps for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and a boys/girls basketball camp at Oklahoma Christian College in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  I was a member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association for 8 years and a member of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches for 11 years.  I was a middle school and high school basketball coach for 18 years.

First, I ask what are their goals in becoming a basketball player?

Second, I ask what do they think it will take for them to become successful at playing basketball?

Third, I ask are they playing for just the fun of it or are they serious about becoming a great basketball player?

Fourth, I ask are they coachable?

Once they answer these questions I give my expectations based on their answers.  If they are willing to meet my expectations then we can begin work.
