About Tyler

I love teaching the cello and seeing students grow. My teaching philosophy is centered around prioritizing the learning processes of each individual student. I believe that understanding how each particular student learns not only leads to better technical and musical results, but also leads to a greater enjoyment of playing the cello.

About the lesson

I believe that getting to know my students is a key component of the learning process. Upon first meeting, I like to ask what brought students to the cello, what their goals are, and what their interests and activities are outside of music. For beginners, I introduce them to the different parts of the cello and the bow. I cover the basics of how to sit at the cello and hold the bow. I also teach students how to read music, if necessary. For intermediate students, I like to hear a piece that they have recently worked on in order to assess their strengths and weaknesses. I then recognize their strengths and address their weaknesses and how to approach fixing them. For advanced students, in addition to hearing and assessing their playing, I like to know what their musical ambitions and future plans are for the cello. If their plans include conservatory auditions or arts supplements for college applications, I like to set up a solid game plan and regimen with them in order to achieve their goals.

I have worked with students of varying ages and levels, ranging from beginning children and adults to advanced high school students.
