About Janet

I finished Culinary School in the late 80's. I started to provide cooking classes through Va. Parks and Rec. In 2012. Since then I have been assisting people to explore their creative side while preparing food for themselves and others. In addition, I have faciliated shopping trips with students to assist them to become more comfortable with the food buying experience. I am a master gardener and believe in using fresh ingredients.

I enjoy the friendships and conversations that people cooking together share. I have a true passion for cooking. I had to leave the kitchen early, due to an injury, but when the companies i worked for found out I had a culinary background i was always given free-range to develop cooking classes.

Cooking is about communicating and explorong new ways to interact with your food. I enjoy the creativity of cooking. The possibilites are endless. I can assist students with becoming comfortable preparing new foods or learning skills to make the cooking experience better.

Cooking is not a chore!!!! Its an adventure!!!

I started on my jobs. I was always asked to facilitate groups at first, and that turned into me developing and teaching my students many skills. However the most popular c lasses were always the cooking classes.

I worked in several kitchens as a prep person, sandwich maker, and line cook. In order to learn more about the craft of cooking, I attended and finished culinary school in the late 80's. I have developed cooking classes for the youth I worked with and occasionally their families. In 2012 I started to provide cooking classes to students that signed up to learn how to cook.

About the lesson

First, i ask question to get a feel for the students comfortability level. Next is an introduction of the food we will be preparing and the techniques used. Followed by preparing the food and critiquing as we go

I have worked with teenagers, young adults, and older adults.

The advice i would give is dont be afraid to learn a new skill. Relax!!! Life is about learning, and you dont know things until you are put in a position to know them.

I was doing volunteer work and several of the adults were in the kitchen preparing to cook. It seemed like the youth we worked with gravitated to the kirchen and without being told started to join in with the cooking process. After a little guidance they were busy cooking away, and we the alderdi were seeded the food. It was a great experience.
