About APRIL

In normal times (currently everything is live-online via Zoom), I teach classes at Beach Bee Yoga in Havre de Grace, MD, I specialize in Fusion style bellydance, but the basic moves I teach to my beginners are applicable to all bellydance styles. I try to adjust the level of difficulty for each student so that they are challenged at the top of their abilities, but not so challenging that they get discouraged. I've been a dancer - jazz, modern, theatrical, etc - for my whole life but once I found bellydance, I fell head over heels in love! I perform in the MD-DE-PA area primarily and run a quarterly hafla (like a "bellydance open mike night") where students are welcome to perform once they've reached that level of skill. I am also a certified teacher of Sharqui: The Bellydance Workout. This is a bellydance cardio fitness class designed by the famous dancer, Oreet. Think - Zumba, but with authentic bellydance moves. It's a great class for people more interested in constant movement and exercise than in slowing down and really drilling bellydance moves. I teach that one at Cecil College in North East, MD (online). I also have taught individual lessons with great success for those students, as it gives me a chance to really focus on that student and help them reach their dance goals.

I love to teach. And I love to dance. Putting them together is divine. I enjoy watching my students improve and gain confidence and an understanding and love for this dance form that is so close to my own heart.

A lifetime of dance in various forms. I have been steadily studying bellydance since 2008.

About the lesson

First I let them know my own background and explain Fusion (if they don't already know). Then I ask about their own dance experience so I have an idea of where they're starting from, as well as taking note if they have any injuries they might need to work around. As we work throught that crucial first lesson, I watch to see how quickly they pick up on the moves, where they're having trouble or where they're having the most fun and adjust the curriculum accordingly.
