I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and have been teaching professionally since 2011. I have been teaching online lessons since 2017. I have a multi-camera setup that allows you to clearly see me, my hands, and my feet. Students are able to access their lesson assignments and sheet music through shared Google Docs and Dropbox folders, which also allows them to receive lesson materials from me in real time during our lessons.

While my setup is a little fancy, all the student will need is:

Something to play on. A practice pad, acoustic drum set, or electric drum set with OR WITHOUT an amp will work.

A device to video chat with me. Phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, whatever you’ve got. Just make sure it’s charged.

A way to position that device so that I can see the student’s hands and legs. If you are unsure about the best way to position your device, we can figure it out during our first lesson.

Now that we've covered how you will learn, let's talk about what you will learn.

Keeping my student’s favorite music and personal goals in mind, I take them through a curriculum focused on technique and foundational concepts that allows them to have a deep understanding of what it is that they are doing, which in turn opens the door for them to explore their own musical creativity as they progress.

I also do something called Song Of The Month, where I send out a drum-less track each month so everyone can create their own drum part to the song. If anyone makes a video of their part, I collect those and send them out with the next song the following month so that we can all gain inspiration from each other's unique parts. I also include lessons on my part each month. Song Of The Month is available for free to anyone, and you can sign up for it on my website.

Online courses are also available. These are great for students to reference while they practice during the week or for students that prefer to learn independently.

Everyone also has free access to my Transcription Library on my site, which has over 100 drum transcriptions in it. Take a look and see if there's anything in there that interests you!

Getting to share the joy of drumming with my students and helping them work towards achieving their goals is an incredibly rewarding feeling, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to teach for a living.

I wanted to do something that was related to what I went to college for. Music has always been a huge part of my life and passing that on to others seemed like the right fit.

I received a Bachelors degree from Berklee College of Music in 2011 and have been teaching professionally since I graduated.

Aside from teaching, I have recorded and performed with a number of bands, the most notable being a metal band called Numbers and an indie/folk pop band called Hey Marseilles. I toured the country with Hey Marseilles in 2016.

About the lesson

Before we begin, I'll make sure to find out your skill level, whether you've had formal lessons before or not, who your favorite drummers are (if any), who your favorite bands are (if any), and what your favorite style of music is. Most importantly, I'll find out what your drumming goals are so that I can develop a curriculum that is right for you.

If you have specific goals you want to accomplish with the drums, make sure your potential instructor is aware of them and find out how they'll help you achieve them.

If you don't have any specific goals in mind and you just want to learn how to play, making sure that you like your instructor's personality is one of the first things you should determine (while this is true for any situation, it is especially true if you decide to let the instructor be your musical guide, so to speak).

Find out if the instructor's teaching style allows for flexibility and if you'll have any input on what you'll learn.
