About Montana
I started my career in teaching as a volunteer tutor for the non-profit literacy tutoring program Reading Partners. I did this all throughout college and then ended up joining their team! After that, I was able to transition into a Reading Interventionist role, working one-on-one and in small groups with struggling readers. My dream had always been to teach in my own classroom and a position teaching 2nd grade opened up at my school four years ago. I was able to start teaching there and have loved it ever since! That moment when a student finally gets something they had previously struggled with, that authentic moment of learning, is so exhilarating to be a part of!
I possess a California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential. I was most recently a 2nd grade multiple subjects teacher for the past 4 years. I have taught students with a wide variety of assets and needs, differentiating instruction to meet these needs and engage student interest. Prior to this, I was a Reading Intervention Instructor, where I engaged in cycles of intervention with students from kindergarten to 5th grade, utilizing a variety of curriculum and created my own lessons. Prior to this I worked as a Site Coordinator for the non-profit literacy tutoring program Reading Parters. In this role, I tutored one-on-one with students 1st grade to 5th grade, trained adults in best practices for reading instruction, and coordinated volunteer tutoring schedules for 50+ tutors.

During our first session, you can expect some relationship building, a preassessment, and to play some games related to the work we will do. I will also be speaking with parents about hopes for their student and our work together. I am also interested in obtaining contact information for the student's teacher(s) to make sure that what I am working on with the student is aligned.
After our first session, I will bring content and resources that align with student interests and parent and teacher input.
If the tutoring session is focused around homework help, I will not just make sure the work is completed, but will also break down any key concepts that the student is struggling with and support them in holding the cognitive load with their work.
If the tutoring session is reading or math intervention, I will come prepared with materials and engage the student in targeted instruction to support them in meeting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based goals. For this service, I may give the student extension work or activities the parent or a sibling can practice with the student.
If the tutoring session is to support with meeting a certain academic standard, we may engage in project-based learning where I will plan out a short unit of study to promote an authentic learning experience.
If the tutoring session is to support the student with organization or executive functioning skills, the student, family, and teacher will assess what the areas of need are and the student and I will work together to create a plan and systems that work best for them.
I have worked with students of diverse cultural, linguistic, and academic backgrounds. I have worked with students with a wide range of special needs, including students who are on the autism spectrum, students with processing difficulties, students who receive speech and language services, students with ADD and ADHD, students with occupational needs, students with executive functioning needs, and students with emotional disturbance.
