About Kenny

I've travelled around the world and worked with people from various backgrounds and languages. This provides me with the skill to adapt and achieve success with my students no matter where they come from.

I am constantly re-evaluating and inventing new and creative techniques to engage students in English learning, including incorperating elements of social media and pop-culture from all ages of literature. The focus on modern entertainment allows me to involve movies, TV-shows, music and other artistic networks into my services that are uniquely arranged to fulfill the students' interests and personal needs.

- High School Graduate

- Bachelors in English (in-progress)

- Volunteer Teacher's Assistant

- Professional Tutor

- Service/Volunteer Worker

I enjoy working in a diverse community and there's nothing more diverse than the internet, where everyone, from everywhere, can stay connected. I want to reach out to students in any way that I can in order to help them achieve their goals.

Being a part of the journey is what matters the most to me. I want to see my students at the end of their academic journey, smiling and ready to tackle what the world has to offer them.

I have always had an interest in teaching, but my first experience that really solidified my work was in South East Asia when I performed an improvised one-on-one tutoring session with a friend of mine. I enjoyed seeing the smiles my lessons brought my friend.

I am a college student pursuing a bachelors in English with more than 2 years of tutoring experience and I spent a semester as a volunteer teacher's assistant for a college ESL class. I typically work with international students, but I do have experience working with middle and high schoolers, undergraduates and graduate students. My primary focus as a tutor has been essay writing, proofreading and editing, although I often explore other resources with my students and work with them to develop healthy writing habits for future reference.

When I work with a new student, I typically start by getting to know their interests. What do they like to do? How can we incorperate that into our lessons and make it both exciting and educational? The unique aspect of my lessons is that they are student led. Based on their input and feedback, I create syllabus, lesson plans or tutoring sessions that include all of the course material and elements that pique the student's interests.

I work with many students of Asian decent and am familiar with handling cultural differences in regions such as India, China, Japan and the Philippines. I also have experience working with students throughout various areas of the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Recently, I have been working with students in the Midwestern and Western parts of the United States. These students vary economically, culturally and linguistically, but that does not deter me from learning and adapting to accomodate them as they need.

For students looking to hire a teacher, my advice would be to find a teacher that is a good fit for you. The best degree doesn't necessarily bring the best exprience. Make sure your choice is someone that is truly helpful to you and makes you comfortable in your academic explorations. Your teacher should be someone that makes you feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and is willing to help you mend them. You need a teacher that you can email with an important question and are willing to consider their advice.

When I started working as a tutor at my local university, I met several students in the graduate program who intimidated me at first. They weren't scary or inappropriate by any means, but they were older and I thought that my abilities were not as developed as theirs. As I started to work with them, I realised that it's not always about the ability to read and write that makes a great teacher. It's the ability to share that information with others. I worked with students that I never believed that I could because I realised my potential in this way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions are the best way to find answers, of course. I think the most important questions to think through are "what can I do?" because, really, it's the students responsibility to learn as much as it's our responsibility to teach. Knowing what you can and can't do on your own is the first step to learning.
