About Cynthia

I'm a millennial with an English degree and four years' experience writing and editing professionally for a major publishing house. I understand the frustrations students have with assigned readings and essays, just as I was once a frustrated student, uninspired by my English curriculum. The secret to success in English is simple: teachers just want to see that your student has understood the material and can draw a clear conclusion from it. And that's where I can help!

I have always tutored family and friends in English because I truly enjoy the material and love to see people develop their understanding of the material and form their unique perspectives on it. This is the first time I will be tutoring professionally, and I'm very excited to offer my services!

I have a degree in English literature from the University of Minnesota, with a focus on 20th century American literature and contemporary creative writing. I wrote and edited professionally for a major publishing house for four years before becoming a full-time freelance editor.

About the lesson

I like to sit down with them (on Zoom or Skype) and listen to them describe what they struggle with specifically in their classes. Rather than creating lesson plans (and thus more work for the student), I prefer to have them bring me their school curriculum and current assignments. I like to ask students questions that help them reframe the material in their minds - for example, helping them understand the material in a modern context can be extremely helpful with comprehension and forming concise commentary or arguments about the text.

I've mainly worked with high school students, but am equipped to tutor middle school or college students as well. I've worked with students who love English and just need a bit of help here and there, and I've worked with students who are math or science whizzes and swear up and down that they don't like to read. In some cases, the latter have even discovered a love for reading that many school curriculums don't bring out!

The most important thing is to find a tutor who can understand what you're struggling with, and who can offer a different perspective or a fresh angle on difficult material without doing the work for you or making you feel bad for not understanding right away. A tutoring relationship is unique because you're not getting graded by your tutor, so you can be honest about what's clicking and what's not, and spend as much time as is necessary on the challenging stuff until it makes sense.

I have been working recently with students that have a lifetime proficiency in conversational English, but are working to improve their writing skills for professional reasons. A client of mine has even gone on to start a blog on his website about corporate business solutions!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Communicating your needs and struggles to a tutor or teacher is actually a lot like an exercise in reading comprehension - just in reverse! You know what you're having problems with, but it can be tricky to accurately express the issues you're having and the type of help you need. A good teacher or tutor can help you explain your needs, but it's up to you to communicate, first when you ask for help and then to let them know if what they're doing is helpful, or if you need to try a different method.
