About Margaret
I am an enthusiastic and popular tutor with students from all age groups -- from kindergarten students to adult learners. (I encourage you to read the reviews that are included on this website). In the public schools, I was a professional tutor for middle school students in the Austin Independent School District (AISD), and have tutored younger children as part of AISD's Victory program. I am an experienced writer and editor with a Masters degree from Brown University, and a journalism degree from the University of Kansas. As a reporter for a daily newspaper, I wrote articles and edited the writing of others. I absolutely love interacting with students, and prefer to work in-person with them, but am also open to remote teaching and learning.
I worked in journalism and marketing for more than 30 years, and am now semi-retired. I taught in the classroom while I was a graduate student at Brown University, and have been in love with teaching ever since. I have always tutored students -- either formally or informally -- in or outside of the classroom. I am now tutoring nearly full time.
I have an undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas and a master's degree from Brown University.
I have been tutoring since 2006. I started in the Austin Independent School District (AISD), and now work with private clients of all ages -- from kindergarten to adult learners.

I prefer to meet in person, but am not opposed to remote teaching and learning. I have found that if my clients and I live far from each other, a public library that is equidistant from each of us works well. I am also happy to travel to your home if that works best.
I've worked with students of all ages -- from five-year-olds to adults.
Read reviews if you can. Talk with the tutor over the phone to get a sense of his/her experience and personality.
I helped an adult student of mine get into Harvard University! He is Chinese, and I helped him with his English and essay writing.

Deadly! Great teaching, patience and dynamic.
Deadly! She is a very thoughtful teacher who puts a lot of thought into how she presents the material. Her lessons were engaging and useful, and she was very patient with everyone in class always encouraging her students to try. I would highly recommend him/her to anyone interested in learning
Deadly! Margaret has been tutoring my 9 year old son in reading. She is very patient working with him as he progresses. She uses flash cards for word definitions, takes time to work with him on new pronunciation, talks to him regularly by telling him small stories to get my son comfortable with her. There has been meaningful improvement is his reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. My son looks forward to his session with Margaret on a weekly basis.
Deadly! Very responsive and easy to work with on scheduling.
