About Mercedes

I'm a retired university biology professor who also has undergraduate degrees in journalism and music. I also earned an ESL certificate and have been privately tutoring English as a Second Language for about 20 years. I enjoy teaching subjects that promote cultural exchange: English, music, cooking, arts and crafts. My varied background makes learning fun for my students!

It is always rewarding to see someone change and grow as they learn a new language or skill. I enjoy helping my students achieve their goals by using hands-on teaching methods without a formal classroom. The best way to learn is through experience!

When I was a graduate student, I received a fellowship for science teaching from the National Science Foundation. I taught supplemental biology to inner city junior high students and combined it with video to make it really exciting for the kids -- and for me! During my university teaching days, most of my students were from foreign countries, so I found myself teaching the English along with the science. That's what led me to earn an ESL certificate.

As I mentioned before, I have a B.A. degree in journalism, and I had to study a LOT of English. I also have an ESL certification. I also have a B.A. in music performance, and my doctoral concentration was in biology and anthropology. When I retired from university life, I started operating my own school. I've been doing that for about 5 years.

About the lesson

I usually evaluate the student on Skype and then develop a plan that meets his or her goals. There is no charge for this.

I have worked with children, teenagers, young adults and professionals.

Look for someone you enjoy spending time with and who can motivate you to excel. These are the only reasons to hire a tutor.

I had a cooking show on TV for 4 years. It's a really fond memory. I still love to cook and entertain.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do you want to learn this subject? What is your immediate goal? What are your long-term goals? What obstacles do you want to overcome?
