About Maxwell
Graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Strong writing, and strong analytical skills in general, are cornerstones of my academic career. I have 6 years of writing tutor experience, helping my peers improve their writing skills from highschool, community college and even at university. In addition to this, my passion for history has allowed me to find great success (and joy) in tutoring others in history at any grade level, especially in essay-focused AP and lower-division college courses. Though I have limited experience tutoring younger students, I have no doubt that my well-rounded education and life experience has prepared me to help those students find improvement and success in their education.
I love watching my student's succeed and turn that success into a greater passion for learning.
I started tutoring in high-school for a writing club. This club focused on helping students achieve the level of writing needed to graduate high school.
Graduated in 2019 with a BA in Philosophy. This degree required an enormous about of rigorous reading, writing and analysis.
Six years of tutoring experience, mostly writing in one way or another. Also, several instances of tutoring students in history, especially American and European history and the type of essay-writing required by these courses in high-school and college.

Getting to know the student a little bit is necessary for any level of tutoring. This helps build a solid foundation where trust is able to flourish. This kind of trust is necessary if you want a student to find success in their tutoring. From that point, I assess their level of proficiency in the subject. This can be done by testing the student or allowing them to demonstrate their level of knowledge. These initial steps help foster a beneficial relationship between student and tutor, as opposed to it being a strictly business transaction.
I have worked typically with students from the ages of 14 to 22. Most of the students I tutor are students who do not necessarily excel at the subject I am teaching in them, but are generally successful in other aspects of their life. For older students, they tend to be capable learners who desired to bring their writing skills to the next level.
I would suggest you find a teacher that does little movement of the pencil themself, and instead focuses on teaching via doing. It's very difficult to listen to someone talk about writing structure, a sentence one way instead of another, etc.; helping a student develop and command their own style through trial and error should be of utmost importance.
I recently tutored a friend of mine for a semester-long history course that she was taking in college. Watching her level of writing improve as the course went on, from her first assignment to her final essay, was pure joy. I'm fond of this event because writing is such an overlooked skill in this day and age, especially it's interdisciplinary nature, so seeing her succeed and come to understand this was just great.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'm not sure that any question in particular should be being asked, but I do think that students should embrace their level of knowledge and be nothing but honest with themself. Not only that, but letting go of any shame or resistance is important as well. There is too much stigma associated with being tutored or needing additional teaching.

Max was very hands on and flexible with my style of learning! I’m a visual person so it’s hard for me to absorb what I’m reading and truly understand it but he was very helpful and made things more clear for me. I will continue to work with him in the future as I noticed a big improvement in my History and English classes after working with him.
