About Sharon
I spent the last decade homeschooling my kids and 6 of those years I co-led a homeschool cooperative. At the co-op, I taught essays, research papers, grammar, college prep, etymology, and choir. My specialty is writing because I am a daughter of an award-winning broadcast journalist, and I have put my father's influence and tutelage into practice in my children's homeschool education, at the homeschool cooperative, and in my role as quarterly newsletter editor for a telecommunications company. I also did proofreading and editing gratis for a Christian apologetic scholar. Now that my kids have graduated from high school and are now attending college, I am ready to continue helping other students. I currently work as an HR consultant, and my hobbies are song leading/teaching, teaching Bible studies, and learning for the sake of learning.

I love helping students to discover their unique learning styles and encouraging them to be the best versions of themselves.
Homeschooling was the primary catalyst for me to start teaching others. It enabled me to grow and learn so much because I had to wear all of the hats: teacher, counselor, principal, and college prep advisor. I came across a vast amount of resources along the way, but reading, writing, and English are the subjects I have the most experience in and enjoy teaching the most.
I have a BA degree and an AA degree in liberal studies, and I have many hours of training in human resources and medical terminology, My background is diverse with a mix of acting, singing, human resources, editing/proofreading, administration, and teaching. I believe this diversity will help me to relate to people with different interests and backgrounds.
Although I am essentially a jack of all trades, master of none, I have a lot of experience to offer, and I have a proven record of success, even though it is in a homeschooling environment. After I homeschooled my kids from elementary through high school, they attended private school, son for his senior year and daughter for her junior year and half of her senior year (I homeschooled her for the first part the senior year due to COVID). My daughter was awarded two royal merit scholarships, student of the month, and two class pins, and my son was awarded a STEM award. Both graduated as valedictorians, and both were awarded college presidential and merit scholarships. My son only applied to 5 colleges but was awarded over $400K in scholarships, including a highly coveted Chancellor's/Provost award and a Regent Scholar award (only awarded to the top 10% of the incoming freshmen). Although these accomplishments are their own, as their teacher for the majority of their primary through secondary schooI years, I had to learn what was needed for them to succeed academically, and I had to tailor it to suit their unique learning styles and strengths.

First, I like to briefly introduce myself and to learn a little about them, especially when it comes to their needs and learning styles. I also need to determine what they hope to accomplish in our time together. It is important to be relatable, realistic, and patient. Validation is another important part of teaching because everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but everyone is capable of growing and learning if they are willing to apply themselves.
I have primarily worked with homeschooled students in elementary through high school.
Be clear about your needs and expectations, and be diligent about application. Learning and growing requires a commitment from both the student and the teacher.
During COVID restrictions, I was able to put more time into my church's virtual praise and worship ministry. I directed two multifaceted music videos and participated in a total of ten music videos.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your academic goals? Do you want or need good grades to get into a particular college? Are you just trying to graduate? Are you really interested in the subject you are struggling in or are you just trying to pass? What motivates you to learn?
