About Tyler

Choice: Student choice drives engagement and quality. Through my five years working as a high school AP English teacher, I've learned that when students know and care about their writing or reading topic, everything improves: the structure of their work, their writing voice, their willingness to try new strategies and take risks, the product length.

In my instruction, students have choice over several things: what they read, writing topic, writing format, and how they organize their thoughts. Through choice in these areas, we practice a variety of reading and writing skills and strategies.

I love reading and writing, and I enjoy that teaching and tutoring allows me to share this content with my students. Always curious about what students have to say, I look forward to learning from a student's process, helping them reflect on strengths and areas for improvement, then watching them try new strategies and grow.

Always a lover of reading and writing, I majored in English at UC Davis, then decided to get my teaching credential at San Jose State University. Feeling inspired after that, I got my first teaching job at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California.

As a licensed high school English teacher, I taught years at the high school level, including AP Literature. In this role, I created reading and writing assignments, designed graphic organizers, helped students brainstorm and organize writing topics, conferenced with them while writing, and provided feedback on their writing.

First, I get to know the student's interests and attitude toward reading and writing. Do they think of themselves as a writer? How often do they read or write in their free time?

Next, I get a feel for their strengths and areas for improvement, by asking them to self-describe these things, but also by asking them to read a short text and write in response to it.

After this, I talk with the guardian and student to set learning goals, discuss possible strategies and activities, decide on homework (if the student or guardian wants independent practice), and design a plan to move forward.

All types: English language learners, students with special learning needs, 504s, and IEPs, students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, gifted and talented (GATE) students, as well as students with ADHD and emotional needs.

Find a teacher who allows you to have choice in what you read and write. In whichever area you seek support, a teacher should guide you toward finding topics meaningful to you. Application essays, homework support, or reading practice -- you can always find a book or writing topic that interests you, and writing about something meaningful will improve your finished product.
