About Charlotte

I am a junior at Barnard College of Columbia University currently studying English Literature with an added concentration of Creative Writing. I am also a practicing visual artist and started my own creative arts camp in the summer of 2019, Creative Kids Playgroup. I love working with children of all ages, and I deeply enjoy helping students forge an appreciation and love for arts of all kinds (whether it be reading, writing, sculpture, etc).

Being twenty years old and working closely with children over the past year, I have found that it is vital that the child I am working with really fosters a connection with the English language in fun ways. Nurturing a relationship to grammar, writing, research, and literature is not only beneficial to the child but it also gives me joy.

My tutoring environment extremely playful and friendly. Whether it be reading a book with a child and thinking critically about plot and characters, or helping them to enjoy the process of writing an essay on King Tut, I want to make sure they see this almost as a book club or mini creative salon!

I graduated at the top of my high school class with a 4.0 GPA, and put most of my time into my high school literary magazine as the editor-in-chief. I have also worked as a reader at The Paris Review. Both of these jobs consisted of reading manuscripts and editing them.

I also spearheaded the Peer Tutoring program at my high school, in which I tutored and emotionally aided elementary school children.

I am self-trained when it comes to teaching children as a tutor/teacher, but in high school I worked with both middle and high school students.

About the lesson

It is important to guage the needs of a student from both them and their parents. The easiest way for me to see their current skills is from reading a past work, and from there I am able to tailor my program to fit their needs.

I offer a $20 session to talk to and get to know your child before we begin our tutoring sessions. This is just to help form a relationship with a student who may be a bit shy or reluctant to having a tutor. This is optional.

I have worked with students ranging from ages 9 - 14. A few of my students have been neuroatypical with conditions such as ADHD and Dyslexia.
